Air mailing laptop home with Korean post?
« on: April 02, 2019, 01:50:34 PM »
I'm leaving soon and travelling for a bit before going home.
I need to send my laptop home. Has anyone sent theirs home using air mail?
I've heard that it's best not to tell them it's a laptop in the box.
I'm sure if I pack it well in soft clothes and lots of bubble wrap it will get back ok.

Anyone sent theirs home?

You can't send a lithium battery in EMS post or Korea Post air mail. I believe you can send it via Korea Post surface mail. If you want it sent home by air mail, the only way to do it is Federal Express, but it is really expensive. I am not sure what countries they all deliver to.

I wanted to send an iPad home for my dad and I couldn't because of the battery. I even tried to send it via air mail, but I said it was something else. They checked it and returned it to me.

If it has a lithium battery, then no.  Unless you use a special service.  Best
to got to your local PO and ask.

It's not ok to freeze your batteries. Also, I had taken a bunch of harddrives with me and they crapped out on me after a few months so something is not so great about the shipping and 'handling' at airports.

Does anyone have the the link where it clearly states no Lithium batteries can be send with air mail? I can't find anything.

I have heard people not telling the post office workers that a computer is inside and has been sent and delivered no problem.

I think they have eased and changed the rules about sending lithium batteries in 2016 or 2017

This is 100% accurate. You can't send lithium batteries by any form of air mail, including EMS.

Surface mail is no problem, but slow. It is reliable, though.

Here's from the Korea Post website:
Quote

Find the link at koreapost.go.kr then go to 우편 > 국제우편 > 우편금지물품 and you'll find the complete list.

It definitely says no batteries allowed. Also, if you go to a post office, they will (likely) have illustrated lists of prohibited articles. Lithium batteries are a no-no.

Metal detectors and metal wands are a no-no. The x-ray machine is supposed to be safe though.

The posts above are correct. Your options are to either send it via surface mail (which will take 2-3 months) or possibly send it via DHL -- however, in order to do the latter, DHL will require you to contact the manufacturer of your laptop, obtain the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) from your laptop manufacturer, provide DHL with the MSDS, and from there, DHL will determine whether or not they can ship your laptop. I recently tried to send something at the post office that contains a lithium battery, and the aforementioned is what they told me (the post office clerks suggested I try DHL and gave me DHL's customer service phone number, and that was what the DHL customer service person told me over the phone).

Also, by the way, if you send your laptop via surface mail to the U.S., the post office will have you fill out a mailing slip where one of the sections says that if the package can't be delivered to the destination address for whatever reason, then you have to choose (check the box) to either have it returned to you via either air mail or surface mail (at your expense), or choose (check the box) to let them abandon the package. Since there is no surface mail from the U.S. to Korea, and sending any electronic item with a litihium battery via air mail is prohibited, they will make you check the box that says to abandon the package if it can't be delivered to the destination address for whatever reason. That was what the post office clerks told me -- just FYI.

Thanks all fro the help.

NZ doesn't accept surface post anymore. So I have to either sell it before I leave or.....
I'm going to Japan after Korea. There is a post office at Kansai airport. I can send it surface post from there.
Seems as long as the battery is installed in the device  there are no issues ending it via surface mail.

It sounds like it would just be easier to take it with you on your travels or sell it for quick cash.

Selling would be a good option but seems every tom dick and harry are selling laptops so wouldn't get much for it.
Taking it with me on my travels would be unwanted extra weight lugging around.

Does anyone know if its allowed to air mail a laptop WITHOUT the Lithium battery??
This would be my best bet as batteries are only $80 back home.

DHL is the way to go.

They delivered my Apple laptop to Korea from the manufacturer in China.

This was going to be my suggestion when I read all of this.

I haven't researched or anything, but batteries catch fire.  Laptops without batteries don't catch fire.  There shouldn't be a problem.  You could even carry the battery around.  It's a little heavy, but not bulky, and would save you $80 if that's important to you.
