Hi...

I'm looking to buy a textbook for my adult class. They want to do some grammar, as well as learn about western culture, and practice everyday conversational skills...I'm just trying to find a book that is not too childish and where the activities are simple/adaptable. I would really appreciate ANY ideas, book reviews, etc

I'm looking for something similar also! I'm going to be starting a parents class at my school next week and have been told that the parents are about medium level in their English. Does anyone have any converstion textbook ideas, or any lessons ideas that I can use.

I use "Basics in Speaking" by Michael Rost for my adult classes. It covers all strands of English and introduces a bit of culture too.

My adults also use a picture dictionary, the new Oxford one is awesome...they also have activities to go with it.

I use 'Person to Person Student Book Starter' Third Edition by Richards for my beginner teacher's class. There are multiple levels from beginner to advanced. Great pictures and layout. It flows nicely, uses natural language and comes with an audio CD all for about 15k won a piece. I recommend them.

I have used 'Person to Person Student Book Starter' too and the teachers really seemed to like it. For a lower level teachers class you could use the 'Totally True' series which has real life stories that are normally quite interesting and are a really good platform for conversations.

English Grammer in use by Raymond Murphy is pretty good. It actually comes recommended by institutes that teach TESOL or CELTA courses in the UK

Hi everyone,

I have to do a teacher's conversation class twice a week and I have been told there will be about 5 teachers and that they are low level and want a textbook.

I figured that for the first class I would need to do some sort of assessment in order to choose a textbook. Does anyone have any ideas of how to go about this?

Also, if anyone has any textbook ideas or lesson ideas for this type of class (I don't know how "conversation" it will really be if they have very low levels...) that would be very, very much appreciated. I was hoping this class would be minimal planning effort as I have 8 other regular lessons a week to plan, so I am hoping to find a book that involves minimal teacher prep...

My school had me do the same thing last year. I went to a local English textbook bookstore, and the people there helped me choose some. I explained what I was looking for, and they suggested maybe 10 books. I think the book we chose is called "Passport to New York." It's an American made book, and is meant for students, but the English is much more natural than Korean books. The teachers thought it was fine, and didn't have problems talking about student issues (homework, tests, etc).

My school has asked me to do a teacher class again this semester (even though last semester NO teachers would show up and it was reallllly frustrating after planning a bunch of stuff) and she wants me to use a text book. I think this will be a waste of time and money but it's not about me, is it? ??? (Especially annoying since I have no budget to buy ANYTHING for my actual students but they will buy textbooks for the teachers, ugh!)

Anyways, does anyone have a good suggestion for a textbook to use or where I could go in Seoul to find a good one. I want it to be natural conversation, maybe with current events and such.. Would appreciate any feedback and/or suggestions for the textbook and class! Thanks fellow 외국인 :D

I went to the Bandi and Lunis bookstore at the Coex. (samsung station, Line 2 Exit 6) There's an adult English learning section there with several books at varying levels. If your students are intermediate to advanced and can carry a short conversation I would recommend Talk Talk Talk by Duane Vorhees. I looked recently and there's a new version out now with more illustrations. For the beginner level or low intermediate there are many books that have similar format, much like some of these middle school books where there are workbook activities, exercises as well as small structured practice conversations.

I also did a cooking class once a month with my teachers...we rotated who instructed each one...they submitted their recipes to me before hand and then they taught the class...it was quite a lot of fun. Regular classes were started with picking a topic from the "cup of conversation" (idea taken from Dave's ESL and topics taken from itesl.org) and discussing it or answering the question then on to the text.

it's a link to a bunch of books my CT was using to study and I in turned used them for my Teacher club.
It has a lot expressions they can't learn in a regular english class. Even one of the most fluent teachers I had last term didn't know the expressions in these.

Hi ya,

Have you looked at Jazz English? They've got a textbook and a workbook with all sorts of conversations and situations in them.

Otherwise, my husband uses TALK TALK at his local community center classes for adults, which seem to be working for his students so far.

Hi

I've been teaching teachers and parents class since November last year and I'm usig Touchstone by Michael McCarthy, Jeanne McCarten and Helen Sandiford. It has some conversations in and the teacher's guide helps out a lot too for extra discussion material. Each teacher and parent received the book with the CD (that comes inside the book). No complaints thus far.
