What head-up-their-ass idiotic civic planner thought it'd be a good idea to set up two, count em, TWO roadwork sites Wednesday morning, rush hour, reducing a busy highway to one, count it, ONE lane, twice? Gah! I got to my school, students were waiting for me in my classroom.

They do pick odd times to start their work but they do, do work. Not sure if the quality of it.

Having said that, in the U.K., that road section would just be coned off for a week before they started working.

I noticed lots of painting happening on the highways yesterday.  It struck me that they tend to use large crews, so the impact on any one area is short-lived.

I'm not sure of the quality of the roadwork, but one thing about Korea, when they do the roads they do em and they do em fast.

State of Michigan? That crap will take all summer. Road repair is one of the last things to complain about here, all things considered.

I agree, but I do have one complaint about their crews. I don't like and find it pretty dangerous the way that the work areas sometimes come up so abruptly. Like when they are working on the highway, and there isn't a work sign, but all of a sudden there are just a couple of orange cones and then a work truck just right there. It would be nice if they tapered it a bit more, and gave more warning. Other than that they sure do get stuff done. Seem like they it just took a couple of months for them to build the new bridge near my house...incredible.

Da Hell?
I can attempt to cook an omelette in 30sec, doesn't mean it's going to come out well.

Road repair, is done at warp speed, yet makes very little difference to the abysmal state of the roads... at least in my city.

The manhole covers are like zits on a teenager's face, they pop up everywhere and there's no logic in their placement. At one intersection, there are 5, all within 2m of each other and not
equidistant or in a straight line. Aside being at totally random places on the road, making them impossible to dodge. The covers don't sit flush to the tarmac either. Driving over one feels like driving over massive pothole.

I know my car doesn't have the best suspension, but you'll see pretty much every Equus and Korean 4X4's chassis bounce like a it's on a jumping castle as sound as it hits one.

Seriously, f*ck whoever designed Korean roads and everyone who looks like them.

I've lived near the new 9 line extension in Seoul and the construction on the road near my home has been going on for AAAGGGEES. Of course they're constructing a huge underground tunnel, not doing simple road repair, but it's literally been 4 or 5 years now.  It was originally supposed to be completed last year, now it's looking like next year...

Might be because the fellas on safety patrol were picked up off the side of the street hours earlier and are paid 30,000 won per day.

Why have a co, who is only at the school to help you with disciplining the older kids (that's literally her only job, she's not a homeroom teacher) when you have to stop teaching and get them to stop? When she ignores students locking each other in cabinets or the student from the other classroom banging on the window and yelling into the classroom? And then after class said how good they were.

I don't always care about kids being noisy, that lightens things up a bit sometimes, but my god if you're going to let them lock each other in a cabinets during class it's only going to go down hill from there. I genuinely like these kids, but none of that is okay. She disciplines them for talking too much, but not for crazy stuff like that...

I don't know why you're complaining: every child locked in a cabinet means one less troublemaker during class!

I am playing the game. I really am. Planned and got my vacation dates sorted after consulting all three schools two weeks ago. Got my CT at my main school to contact the other schools to confirm dates with them, including when and if they want summer camp. Got all of that done. Planned and booked a small surgical procedure and a short little away holiday.

Away school says to me today "you must do summer camp these days" .... and points out the exact days of my surgical procedure and recovery period.

I explain, somewhat annoyed, that unfortunately those dates have been approved by my main school as vacation days. I am told that this must change. I explain "this is impossible". I show them a week where I can fit in a summer camp for them. They will apparently have to see if it suits them.  I then ask what it is they would like me to do for camp and they throw a couple of really great ideas at me... so I ask what my budget is... it is ZERO, so no. I won't do science camp or art camp, I will do a zero budget type camp (I am used to spending a little of my own cash but you have annoyed me now so you will get a real proper ass zero budget camp.) F*%k you very much.

To me this is already fixed, agreed, done, dusted.  Tell your travel school, 'No!' and then see what happens.  Don't waste your time compromising with them.  You will have an operation, which is all fixed, and some time after to recover, that is also fixed.  You don't have to change anything, it is your travel school, your main school is the important one.  I've always found to play the game when everything is fixed is to say 'no!' and then wait for them to come back with something, if they can.  You don't need to compromise, they need to drop it and move on.

Yeah, I pretty much told them to take a flying leap, but in a really nice way (fake nice way). I also keep reiterating that it's impossible. I have left a message for my main school handler to call and discuss it with my CT here.

Wow, nearly 300 pages deep and on the third rant thread  Nice to see you all still keepin' it goin' strong!

...the second coming!

So glad my ass is righteous. Sorry for the resta ya'll.

   C'mon, like I'd miss the Second Fourth Coming of the R/V Megathread?   :P

Hi, welcome back, nomadicmadda. Did you end up going to Sogang to study Korean? How was/is it ?

I did.  I took my 6mo break and did a semester, a CELTA in Thailand, and snagged a sweet hagwon job (one of the rare few) that started back in March.  Too busy during work hours to ever be on here though, plus we have a US curriculum at this new place. I don't need anything from the lesson planning forums here, since they're predominantly for the Korean public school textbooks.

Honestly the last time I was using this forum regularly, the mods were having a general crack-down on the discussions forums and I pissed one or two in particular off.  After that, they were arbitrarily silencing my account even when I wasn't breaking TOS, and it just got a bit old.  I suppose that was the intent, though, so internet points for them  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Getting pretty tired of Koreans thinking their education system is the best when my laptop is 10 years old and the internet and external mouse need extensions to work, and they only work if you angle them in just the right way. How am I suppose to lesson plan efficiently if I'm constantly trying to make the mouse work?

an example of the astounding 'logic' that goes on in this country - i'm in a small teachers office. the aircon hasn't been turned on by the admin office, but the aircon unit still turns on. but when you turn it on it's set to 난방 - heating - rather than 낸방 - cooling. if you try to turn it onto the 낸방 setting it just goes back to 'heating'.

so the geniuses that inhabit this office with me have decided to turn on the heating, but just put it at the lowest setting - 18C - because since this number is lower than the outside temperature number they think it will just cool down the room.

but all this thing is doing is blowing freaking HOT AIR all around the room. when i leave to teach class and come back in the room is noticeably hotter than all the classrooms, as well as the outside.

how these geniuses think that hot air is going to cool down a room, i really don't know.
