Yeah just yelling at him like a nutter. Cathartic though. Also deserved. God, out of the thousands of kids I've taught over 9 years, he may be the worst

It's always said that there are no bad kids, only bad parents. I kind of agree with that but while that may be the case, when you're teaching dozens or hundreds of different students a week, you don't have the time or patience to teach a single kid manners or make accommodations for them when they're acting like a little shit.

My only critique of your approach is that the little bastard is going to take this whole thing as a game. He's going to take it as a challenge to find a way to disrupt your lesson, while sitting in the corner; playing drums on his desk, throwing things etc.

Personally, I'd remind your director that you're only able to teach English, not manners, and if he keeps distributing your lesson, your other students will complain to their parents and they might move to a different hagwon. Better he kicks the little shit out and lose 1 liability as opposed to losing several paying students.

Well I work at a private elementary school. This is the after school bit, so the parents pay extra, but it's optional. My manager said "oh we've never kicked a kid out of the after program before". But the other teachers all agreed it's a mental policy and just makes so many more students drop out instead. I'll keep pushing it if he's bad. Worst comes to worst I'll drop him off at manager's office or HR teacher. Or just refuse to let him in my classroom altogether. I don't care. I'm not putting up with this shit every day for the next 3 months. Life is too short.

But yes, I know he'll start thinking of it as a game, but 3 months of being patient and trying to reason with him, I finally gave up/exploded.

Some kids are objectively terrible. Some kids just can't be taught. Probably only the second kid in 9 years, but... Yep.

I remember being so fed up with a kid during my first year that I picked up his desk ó with him in it ó and placed it outside my classroom. Looking back I... probably wasnít a very good teacher and could have handled it better, but maybe not. Itís kind of like berating the customer service representative over the phone. You take it out on them because theyíre the ones presented to you, but theyíre not the ones writing the corporate policy. Managers have to be responsive to their employees, and parents need to be responsive to their kids (Iím *guessing* itís not the kidís desire to be in that class). When theyíre not, itís hell for everyone.

Did you get the kid to crack at all, even for a moment?

yeah i made him cry today by berating him. but then 10 minutes later he acts like it didn't happen and is as happy as larry (and being an annoying shit again). i wonder if he has some kind of undiagnosed condition. but that's not my job to find out - all i want to do is teach my class, which he stops me from doing....every few minutes, every single day

but yes, what am i supposed to do? all the other students are suffering from him being there. feels like the parents/manager/school don't care and that it's my job to just "deal with it". mental

Either a condition or he's learned that crying is his trump card and he'll always get his way once he turns on the faucet.  You're describing the patron saint of spoilt brats.

I suppose just not allowing him in as an option, but again. You're probably going to find that he's going to start knocking on the door, turning off the lights etc. he seems to thrive on attention. The other issue is that it's against the law to not allow a student into the class or kick them out, apparently, you're robbing them of the opportunity to receive an education. Ridiculous, I know, but there's a chance your manager might simply choose to ignore it, under the circumstances, and do nothing if you don't allow him in. If he does throw the book at you, you could simply feign ignorance so nothing to lose with giving it a shot. Give the kid a wordsearch or worksheet to complete while he's outside, so you can at least say you've given him work to do.

If the kid complains that you wont let him in again, you're bringing to attention a situation that your management is trying to sweep under the rug and putting pressure on them to do something.

I've never had students this bad, but when I do get some really bad attention seekers who constantly interrupt the lesson I'll tell them to stand in front of the class, while I sit down near the students. I'll then tell him (it's always a boy) that since he wants the classes attention he now has it and he can say whatever he feels is so important. I'll stress the point by instructing the class to pay close attention to the student in question... the kid will usually try to say something funny and act the fool for a few seconds and then try to sit down, but I wont let him. I'll make him stand there until he feels really awkward and stupid in front of the whole class. After a minute of standing in front of the class while every student stares at him in silence, not amused, the kid breaks and they sit down feeling pretty embarrassed (or at least appearing so).

It's pretty mean, but I save it for the rare occasions that you get a really annoying attention seeker.

well the whole point is it's an after-school class - extra-curricular - not a compulsory one. by not letting him in i just meant dump him with the manager/HR teacher. and i refuse to give him anything fun like a word search because it's 1) extra work for me and 2) unfair on the students who have to study

i've tried similar techniques to what you've said but it doesn't seem to change much. momentary embarrassment but then 15 minutes later, back to normal (ie being a little dickhead). it is weird.

Why are comments on a job posting thread deleted when they are legitimately critical of the job offered?  There is a job up now that is below standard in pay, but the poster tried to couch it in terms that justified the low wage.  People called him on it, and I see now that the multiple comments have been deleted and the ad still stands.  So, is the position now taken by waygook that unsuspecting, inexperienced applicants can be taken advantage of because legitimate critiques exposing the flaws will be summarily deleted?  It would be good to have some clarification on this so people don't waste their time.  Seems like a benefit of having jobs posted here would be that more experienced players could help people out.

They should just clarify that any posts critical of a paid ad will be deleted.  Save people the effort.

If there isn't a justifiable explanation I will just post on reddit or other places. If we can't call out Mcdonalds level salaries and stick together as teachers then what is really the point of having a place like this? Part of the benefit is being able to band together and flush out scumbags who try to lowball.

My comment was deleted and all I had done was highlight their part-of-the-family work environment and premier location.

Well, that'll teach you for trying to help promote that position.  Although, I think we can all agree Yanggu pretty much sells itself.  I didn't think Gunpo's English slogan of "With Book" could be topped, but when I discovered Yanggu's slogan was "Where you goin'?" I knew we had a new winner.

Pretty sure there was a post about a rule change earlier in the year. While we can be critical of a job posting, we aren't allowed to do so in the job ad thread. You need to make a new thread criticizing the job ad now.
Back once they made this rule, there was a mod or 2 doing this every other day for a short time.

As I understand it, you create a new topic and post the link to it on the offending job posting.
The idea is that you still are able to give valuable insight to job seekers without every job posting immediately being overrun by comments like "This job sucks, the employer sucks, and whoever posted this sucks, and if you're considering applying, then you suck too."

There was an issue a few months back with the same number of posters bombing *every* job posting, mostly because they felt like doing so would somehow drive up the ESL wage norms or something. This obviously lead to a number of complaints from those posting the jobs.

On the other hand, if you feel that there's something *illegal* about a job posting *please please please* report it so that it can be dealt with (removed, and the poster issued a warning and explanation of why the post was bad. Some honestly had no idea.).

Dumped w500k into Coupang money to get 5% cashback on a big purchase, got the confirmation screen, closed all them boxes, bought what I wanted, job done.

NOPE

The mother fuckers auto debitied another w100k from my bank immediately after the purchase.

Went back and had a look what just happend and they set the Coupang money to auto recharge if it falls below x amount.

Now I've got w100k sitting on there and nothing I want to spend it on. Raging.

Just got my heart shot down, but I knew that it was coming.  Being gay in Korea is so so hard (as it is everywhere), but at this moment!  Holy!  I will never again be someone's secret, as I have been for the past three relationships!  I do wish I could smoke a j here legally!

I don't miss it enough for it to be an issue, but I do miss it a lil bit. Especially since I drink more now.
Sometimes I wonder if I should take up vaping again
