I’m surprised hear students answer the ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ question with ‘Mukbang YouTuber’. That’s a career? (Unfortunately it is. Some people make a living doing that. Attractive women can get money simply for eating food.)

Do mukbangers trend skinny or “attractive”? My impression was no. Part of their appeal; watch people not particularly concerned with their appearance eat as they wish.

Rant: Lately I find it hard to fall asleep again once disturbed, to the point where I might not fall asleep again at all. Tonight’s culprit: daughter wet the bed. At least it gives me a good excuse to go out an run early in the morning. Also, my daughter’s on a funny daycare schedule now. One week there catching a cold, the next week home recovering — without fail  (I know, daycares aren’t officially open anyway)

I can't speak for Korean mukbangers, but as far as American ones the food is part of the highlight, but probably 70% of the content is their personality. I started watching Troyce simply because his vid was about eating a whole gator but I subbed him because he was talking about shit in the news and had some interesting takes. Some mukbangers do that- news or entertaiment reviews with food. I subbed Toshpointfro because she had some weird food I was checking out but she's one of those big positivity people in a chill way and after watching her vids it always puts me in a good frame of mind.

Mukbanging isn't easy. It's not just stuffing your face and people watching. They have to work at their content.

Another 15 minute section on TV watching Koreans boil and eat instant noodles, while acting like they've never seen or eaten such a thing before. Do Koreans literally NEVER get tired of watching people do the same mundane thing over and over...and over? Mental

Go on DM,tell me I'm just annoyed because my wife won't let me have power over the remote (whereas in reality I'm annoyed because I'm trying to read a book and the slurping sounds they are making are absolutely revolting)

I'm also noticed Korean TV has recently devolved and now they put microphones directly next to people's mouths when they are eating, so you can hear every ****** chewing sound they make in dolby ****** surround sound. Just....why
Then why don't you just turn it off or ask her to turn it off if it's so annoying?

Some people like the sound of people eating. Some don't. It's like ASMR. Some people like certain sounds some don't. Like I find engine and mechanical sounds almost soothing but I imagine to some people the sound of a purring engine is like nails on chalkboard. Different strokes n all that.

Could be a form of misophonia....

Quote
Similar to OCD, misophonia presents differently in each individual. Misophonia may range from mild (for example, decreased tolerance of certain types of sounds) to severe, excessive sensitivity to specific auditory (sound) triggers. These sound triggers are often highly specific, including sounds emitted in the context of common human behavior such as sounds associated with: chewing, breathing, swallowing, stepping, lip smacking, tapping, and speaking (sometimes specific spoken sounds). In some cases, extreme sound sensitivity, a characteristic of misophonia, is associated with the behavior of a specific individual, such as “my brother chewing,” or “my mother’s voice.” In other cases, the presentation may be more generalized (e.g., all women’s voices, barking dogs) or may include environmental or engineered stimuli (e.g., “the hum of fluorescent lighting, clocks ticking, etc.”).

Individuals with misophonia describe encounters with triggering sounds resulting in discomfort, distress, or anger. Affected individuals liken experience of the sound trigger more closely to irritation, disgust, or even pain, rather than anxiety/fear. The magnitude of disturbance is not necessarily proportional to the duration or the volume of the sound trigger. For example, some children may exhibit an intense outburst when seemingly low-intensity sounds are encountered. The most common behavioral response is the avoidance of and/or withdrawal from sound triggers or situation/stimuli that
are likely to result in exposure to the sound. In some cases, situations or stimuli associated with specific sounds are also avoided (i.e., conditioned aversion), as just the possibility of encountering triggers may result in distress or discomfort. For example, an individual may avoid restaurants because of the high likelihood of encountering chewing sounds. Among youth with misophonia, rage or anger outbursts may occur in the presence of triggering sounds or stimuli associated with sounds (e.g. being in a room full of Halloween candy may trigger an outburst in a child with extreme sensitivity to the sound of opening a plastic wrapper).

https://iocdf.org/expert-opinions/misophonia/

I'm always kind of reminded of this when I hear Ricky Gervais talking about being out in public, because he seems to hate any noise made by anyone else.  My dad as he's got older seems less tolerant of noise when we go out.

I just don't get why it's such a big deal. Like, go to another room? Ask her to turn it off? Do something about it other than complaining?

I absolutely hate the shows about parents with their kids. Like, literally can't be in the room when they're on. When my partner watches them, I just go to another room or go wash dishes, or on occasion ask them to watch it some other time.
Everyone has stuff that annoys them.

I'm with you on this. It's very easy to ignore things like that or, as you say, just go into another room. I learned this when I was younger. It was just part of having siblings and a large family.
"To be honest, it surprises me how many younger women are attracted to me over 40.  But I still don't see a lot of 9s and 10's.  Mostly 7s and 8s.  I had some pretty good looking women be mutually attracted to me back in the day." hangook77

Yes, they do.  And the ranting/venting thread would be an ideal place to VENT about them.  Pretty sure he wasn't actually looking for solutions or feedback.  That would go against the whole purpose of this forum.

You know what annoys me?  People that come on to the ranting/venting thread and criticize people for ranting or venting.

I came across a video of a Westerner, living in Japan, explaining why he doesn't watch Japanese T.V. He makes some pretty valid points and observations, specifically as I noticed some parallels between Japanese and Korean television.

Point 1

The television industry has had to adapt the same way the music industry has. When artists began circumventing music labels to upload their music online and listeners relied on the internet to access, discover and purchase music, record labels were forced to adopt even more conservative practices to stay afloat. This meant, the vast majority of music they'd air on the radio through channels used pre-internet era would need to have an incredibly broad appeal, thus, music on the radio could seem fairly insipid, vanilla and generic. This same phenomenon has happened to television where, the younger generation in particular, are turning to streaming services, YouTube, Twitch etc. in lieu of television. Television is likely going to get more bland and generic.

Point 2

From trashy to good television, Western audiences have an insatiable taste for controversy and conflict. We want to see Gordan Ramsey call someone a 'f*cking donkey' or watch morbidly obese people scream like banshees for being denied some Mcnuggets. The guy in the YouTube video mentions that Japan is an extremely 'polite' culture and this type of television would be incredibly uncomfortable and awkward for your average Japanese person to watch. Perhaps the same is true for Korea.
While I don't watch Korean T.V, I've yet to hear about a show where the food was criticized or mocked. everything is delicious or amazing. The exception is in Korean soap-operas, which pretty much dominate television in Korea.

Last week, my wife sat for 90min in the waiting room at the dermatologist and had nothing to pass the time but endure a television show of an American family kissing every angle of Korean culture's ass; close ups of them chewing kimchi and saying things like "I don't know how I lived without kimchi, this is better than anything in the US etc."

Korean T.V is full on shite.
The obvious way I deal with it is to simply, not watch it. The other way is to try and make sense of why it's the way it is.

One of my favourite bands in the world is Glass Animals. Great, indie rock............ I don't know how to classify them, they're like Alt-J,there isn't really a genre that fits well. Indie-pop? Who knows? Anyway I really like them.

Their third album was supposed to come out this week, Dreamland. Really hyped. Well, they've gone and delayed it a month. Why?

They don't want to take attention away from the BLM movement.

Like............... ... you're a British indie band. This is not to say that they're not popular, they have a fair following on both sides of the pond.

But............... really? JFC, do they really think that their album would detract from the movement of BLM and Police Reform? It's an indie record from a relatively obscure UK band. These guys aren't Coldplay, they're not The Stones.

This is one of the most arrogant and narcissistic things I've ever heard. I know their heart might be in the right place, but it's arrogant as hell,

(In b4, "you're just angry you have to wait longer." No, I've been here 7 years. I wait longer for everything. I handled waiting to see Nightcrawler 6 months after the USA, I can handle this. haha)

I didn't say make, I said ask.

The problem us clear
1. You're upset that you don't have control over certain noises being made in your own house.
2. You're upset that certain people don't find said noises as upsetting as you do or are even entertained by them. Furthermore, and this is just speculation, but they seem to know you are bothered by it and continue to do so otherwise.

Possible solutions-
1. Discuss this with the person creating the noise. Reach an amicable solution.
2. Engage in some sort of tolerance building exercises to the noise.
3. Bitch about it every 3 months on waygook.org and vent about something you can never possibly change- the fact that some people are entertained by this content, likely resulting in you snapping one day 5 years from now in a fit of temper that will result in a broken TV or some restaurant owner/diner filing charges.

Also, refuse to admit that your lack of power and/or communication in this situation is a source of frustration. No reason to have any self-honesty or accept that you have any agency over this. Better to externalize all blame.

Then doesn't that mean most Korean entertainment is full of conflict?

I think partly the reason for "agreeable TV" and our exposure to it is because we usually encounter it in situations where the television equivalent of muzak would be playing. Situations where the proprietors would have a vested interest in banal content.
