Wife: Thinking of buying a Grandeur as our next car, next year or the next after.
Me: Grandeur? *Insert multiple expletives*
Wife: Itís a car for manager level in Korean companies.
Me: Itís a car for cnuts.
Wife: The new model looks nice.
Me: Iím not driving a cnutís car.
Wife: Tesla?
Me: Letís discuss it nearer the time.

Used. Pay cash. Do not put down a huge debt on something like a car. They devalue so fast that they are useless later......... Except to sell for cheap.

That's why YOU should be the one to buy cheap.

Safe, fuel efficient, big enough for your purposes. That's it.
The first thing to say is that this is definitely not pyramid selling, OK?

Do Koreans really associate car models, colors etc. with professional standing?

Would explain why people always rubber neck when they see me getting into my 16 year old Audi A4. It's like their brains short circuit and they can't comprehend a foreigner (especially a lowly English teacher) purchasing an imported vehicle. I got it for 5 million won ffs. That's like half the price of my wife's 2013 Avante.

I used to think like that. Then my partner convinced me to let us buy a brand new Hyundai Ionic. Best decision she ever pushed me to. It's a hybrid so we got a mountain of government subsidies, and we paid it off in under a year. No debt. Amazing fuel efficiency. Nothing luxurious, but it's a comfortable little car.

Used cars here are typically also abused cars. You know how people don't take care of apartments they rent? They do the same for their cars.

People are stupid with their status cars, though. When I see a brand new BMW belonging to someone that lives in a junky little villa, I have to shake my head. I live in a relatively non-luxurious apartment. And yet the parking area is full of expensive imports and brand new Genesis and Grandeurs. If you've got the money for that kind of car, you really should upgrade where you live before spending all your money on your ride.

Agree with this but I'm with CO2 on the brand new car issue.

The neighbours at our previous place had a Kia Morning when we moved there. They were not really wealthy nor was their place particularly expensive. Within 3 or 4 years, they bought a brand new Tucson and a brand new Grandeur. I mean they had these both at the same time. Mind blowing. They ended up selling the Tucson a year or so later because the husband apparently lost his job. He was at home a lot so that's why I assume.

Back in my home country, I'm 100% for buying used cars, because you can usually find like-new last-year's models for much cheaper than the current models, and if they're being sold by a reputable dealership, you've got nothing to worry about. But here, the only used car I would buy is a super cheap, disposable beater if I just needed it for a year or so. If it was something I was planning on using for a while, the government gives so many subsidies on new car purchases, it's not a bad idea to buy new here. Especially because the used car market here is a lot shadier than what you'll usually find in our home countries.

went to the local mart and completely forgot i wasn't wearing a mask. i mean, i go to this mart 4-5 times week and have always worn a mask before. they know who i am. they see me all the time. i don't even have to tell them my address (for the points system) as they memorise it. the mart was pretty much empty anyway. guy on the speaker system was going mental, saying ALL CUSTOMERS MUST WEAR MASKS in korean. the cashier was also like YOU SHOULD WEAR A MASK (in banmal too)!!!! i was like i forgot, i'm sorry, i didn't mean to. then the customer next to her was all YEAH WHY ISN'T HE WEARING A MASK. this was the first time ever. come on. i've definitely seen other koreans in there with no masks recently. the workers didn't seem to call them out at all. no to mention the amount of people who have masks on, but not covering there nose or mouth. that's also fine?

not to mention this place is surrounded by coffee shops and restaurants, packed full of people with no masks. smokers seem to hang around outside the mart too, also with no masks. no one confronts them

i mean, ok, i made a mistake and i said sorry. no need to keep being quite so rude about it. guess i'll start shopping somewhere else..

So this is a new word for me. I suspected it's just another way of spelling "****", but I wanted to verify:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cnut_the_Great

This gives me ideas.

Cnut was a bit of a ...

at least according to the Saxons.

Starting from 1 June 2020, all foreigners, excluding holders of A-1 (Diplomatic), A-2 (Official), A-3 (Treaties) and F-4 (Overseas Koreans) Visas, who reside in Korea with long-term visas, shall apply for a Re-Entry Permit through a local immigration office before leaving Korea if they wish to maintain their status and period of stay. Leaving Korea without a Re-Entry Permit will result in cancellation of their Alien Registration in accordance with Article 37 of the Immigration Act. In this case, the foreigner must obtain a new long-term visa to re- enter Korea. All foreigners who are granted a Re-Entry Permit and wish to re-enter Korea shall undergo a medical examination not earlier than 48 hours prior to the date of their departure for Korea and present a written diagnosis when requested by a transport operator and an immigration officer. Failure to do so may result in re-entry denial. The diagnosis shall be written in English or Korean, signed by a medical examiner and issued by an authorized medical institution.

So ... just to leave the country, even on an F visa (except for ethnically Korean F4s) foreigners have to go to the immigration office to apply to leave the country ... then while on vacation get and pay for a medical test (which is not cheap). What a pain in the @$$. F6s and F5s, you have to do it, too.

Waygs need to do this health check because they might bring Wuhan back.

Koreans donít need to because itís impossible for them to bring Wuhan back.

I mean, what planet do these people live on?

Iím not against the health check think really, just that itís not being applied to all travelers. Itís just... disgusting.

Not surprised, though. Just Korean things innit.
Haven't you got some pictures of birds to be jacking off to, son?

No.

Citizens cannot be refused entry to their country.

If public health officials could refuse entry to citizens, they would.

Why are Koreans allowed to leave the country without applying to leave in advance, only foreigners? And why are Koreans allowed to return freely from international travel without having paid for a special medical checkup, but returning foreigners have to?

All the Kyopos can go back to the USA aka Covid-Central and return freely to Korea.
