D: Dead animals are the worst.

In the apartment above me, lives one of my students and her family. Her father is a deadbeat and over the weekend, threw the same dead mouse into my apartment twice. I even caught him the 2nd time. He regularly throws his trash into my apartment, and if I have everything closed, he slides it under my front door, or leaves it on my tiny little balcony.

He does what??? This is some mind blowing shit that I'm trying to wrap my head around.
How the hell is he able to throw anything INTO your apartment? From the street, through the window or what? How does he have access to your balcony? Also, how big of a gap do you have under your front door if he is able to slide something under it? That's not supposed to be like that.

But most importantly: why do you let this happen?

Exact same questions sprung to my mind.  I cannot visualize any scenario, besides you having a wide open window that he is somehow able to chuck items into, where this could happen. Does your door contain a pet entrance?  Why would you not follow him and confront him, or go to the landlord, your school or the police?  He twice threw the same mouse in?  Did you return it for home to just send it on back? Is he mailing you garbage?  I don't care about the technically trespassing part, but the garbage in the apartment has intrigued me.

I've already told the school but, they don't think there is anything that can be done, as they aren't sure it's illegal, just not very nice.
My front door has a decent gap from the floor to the start of the door. The time I did catch him and he ran off, I yelled "hajima" in an angry tone.
The first time he done it, I just kicked it back outside the apartment, and when I came home from work, he was throwing it back under my door again.
If he has things with small amounts of trash, for example a single piece of chocolate that is wrapped in plastic, he will throw that piece of plastic under my door.
If it has something bigger, that can't be slid under my door, he throws his trash onto my balcony.
My student's mum will often clean up anything that is left on my balcony, if she notices it before me though.

The guy sounds like a real piece of work.  What a d*ck.

Wow, what a real coward, as useless as they come.

Wonder what his problem with you is. Is it just because you're a male foreigner, or did you two have an altercation once that morphed into this monstrosity?

Also, pretty sure that what he's doing is definitely illegal. At the very least it would be considered harassment, but I can imagine this also falling under some kind of illegal littering ordinance or something. Not sure how seriously the police would take it, though, they're pretty useless about stuff like this unless property damage or threat to personal safety is involved, but filing a report could get things rolling or, at the very least, will start a paper trail regarding this guy in case it escalates. You'll probably want to install a camera catching him in the act as proof, though.

Have you thought about getting one of those gap-fill draft stoppers to close that space under your door? It may not stop him from dropping shit onto your balcony, but it should help put a stop to him stuffing garbage under your door.

When you say balcony, do you mean a small platform outside your window, or do you mean the small shared walk-space in front of your apartment entrance?

If the latter, you could talk to your landlord (with the help of a co-teacher) who may care as it's littering in public space.
If it's the former, the landlord will probably not care too much.
You might want to bring along a coteacher (especially an older ajjuma-style coteacher: they tend to be very assertive about these kind of things!) and politely ask the neighbour why he's throwing his trash on your living area. Hopefully being treated like a naughty child might embarrass him enough to stop. It might be helpful to get some kind of picture/video proof to head off the inevitable denials.

My front door goes to the stairwell of the apartment, it's only a 3 apartment building, very small, and mine is the only one on the first floor.
The balcony is a small area I can walk onto, that is outside, it has like the AC motor or something on it, and there is a rail I can use to dry things like blankets after washing them. it's very small, not much room to walk on it though.
I don't think the guy would care, even if confronted, based on what my boss told me about the guy.

I don't think it's anything personal against me.
He's basically just a deadbeat. And, I don't think he wants the rest of my student's family know what he is eating / drinking / etc. so he uses the gap under my door for that. The only other apartment in the building is the landlords, and I doubt he'd want to put trash into her place.
Honestly, until the mouse it hasn't been much of a problem. It's usually just small wrappers and crap. The worst was the dead mouse, the second worst was a plastic container filled with, what looked like, fish bones.

I didn't think of something like that for the gap, cheers for the link, I'll check it out. :D

Any idea why he would do this? What's his beef with you? Did you bang his wife? Is he mentally challenged?
In any case, I would be seriously pissed and do something about it. Instead of a simple "hajima" I would have gone apeshit and bang on his door untill he opens it, while yelling all the curse words I know in Korean.
As someone else wrote: I'm sure throwing trash onto someone else's property is against some kind of regulation. But throwing a dead animal into someone else's living space is a health hazard and definitely against the law. That would warrant a call to the police in my opinion.
Like others wrote: Do something about that gap under the door. Try to get him on tape. And every time something happens, make a freakin huge deal about it. It's best if you catch him in the act. In that case, don't get physical but question the motherf..ker and yell at him at you heart's content. Threaten him with the police. But even if you don't see him doing it, complain to his wife, to your landlord, to the building management or whoever untill it stops. This is really not okay at need to put and end to it.

Sounds like escalating bullying behavior to me, especially with the mouse bit. He might have targeted you simply because he thinks you're an easy punching bag for his own frustrations and inadequacies.

The mouse would have done me in. No idea how I would have reacted in the spur of the moment, but I guarantee it wouldn't have been quiet, lol.

That link is just an example but definitely not the best thing available. I think that particular seller is charging something like 15k won for shipping alone, and it's coming from overseas. You can definitely find similar things available locally from a seller with more scruples, maybe even from Daiso. I recommend asking someone what stuff like this is referred to in Korean so you can find better options.

No beef with me, the guy is just a deadbeat. The thing is, when he does it, I'm at work. The 1 time I caught him, was because I was allowed to leave early.
I don't know any curse words in Korean haha. Hajima was the only word I know that seemed useful for that situation.
Also, his wife/ex-wife, I don't know their official status, works 3 jobs and I rarely see her. However, he hasn't done it since I caught him putting the mouse there but, it's only been a few days.
I'll try block that gap, and if/when he does it again, I'll see if my co-t can talk to the landlord about it; or the police if he does a dead animal again. >.<

Cheers! I'll have a look for something on gmarket. I go on vacation soon, so it might need to wait until I'm back. Mostly because I'm not sure it would arrive before I go away.
The daiso near me is tiny, but I'll be near there this afternoon, for a teacher's dinner (though, the teachers are watching a movie, and I'm free to roam about the area until the movie is over, so can walk into town) so I can go there and have a look if they have something.

When I caught him putting the mouse under my door, he was squatted in front of my door, so wasn't really sure what was going on. It wasn't until I opened the door, and see the mouse I kicked outside earlier back inside my place. By that time he was already holed up inside.

Maybe he honestly thought you had no idea who was doing it until he was caught red-handed. xD

Keep a pic of the draft stopper weather stripping thing handy, too, to show workers in case you don't see anything. They might know of something that isn't quite in line of sight, or might even be able to refer you to another store that will have a few things.

... would a hardware store carry something like this? I know I've seen it on sale in stores like Homeplus every once in a while, but it's not consistent.

There's a hardware store right outside my school. I can take a picture of it and show them. :D
I'll do the same for Daiso. :D Hopefully there will be one in a shop here, if not, I'll check out gmarket and have it delivered haha.

Another one that doesn't seem too bad unless I've missed a huge red flag?  Starts at 2.3 (could negotiate higher) plus housing but would definitely ask for more info about number of classes.

Pre-determined 10 vacation days was a red flag for me. I'd rather choose when to use my vacation time.

I have had two, in which I could choose my vacation.

The first, (back in the day), let us take our 5 working days whenever we wanted, as long as sufficient notice was given.  The school had three foreign teachers and plenty of Korean teachers, they would just combine the classes for week...(not that many kids).  So, if Joe-Shmoe wanted to take a week off in February, we all just combined the classes that made it all work...and it did.  There was no panic, there was no nonsense.....then again, we only closed for national holidays.  We did not follow suit like the other robots and take vacation when every other phucking school did.

The second...well, when I was told I would not be able to take my 10 days until 10 days before the end of my contract, after making standing my ground  against that, I was "given" permission to take my 5 days in two different blocks.  However...as I realliy did like the school and the perks that came with it, I agreed to capitulate on 5 of those days and spread them out a bit, as i was the only teacher....

Hogwans are so ****** stupid...just let the teachers take the holiday when they want, combine the classes, have some work repared....

..not hard to do.

It's in Mokdong (not cheap)

Yes, considering the school there will be 40 plus classes a week.

The working hours...1:45-10:15....for 2.3?

Phuck that.

In job ads, saying predetermined vacation time seems to be rare. I have heard many stories of it being like that but, until now, never seen a job ad showing that.

The heater I ordered back in october and tried to get refunded never arrived. The seller has now listed it as having been delivered, but it never arrived to me.
And cause it was an overseas seller, once they marked it as shipped, getting a refund wasn't possible. >.<

Wow...just...wow.

To be fair, almost every hagwon chooses when you can have vacation - and always has as far as I know

In job ads, saying predetermined vacation time seems to be rare. I have heard many stories of it being like that but, until now, never seen a job ad showing that.
i would say predetermined vacation for teachers is true for most teachers around the world

When you have 12 weeks off per year, you can find some time for a cheap week or 2 in those 12. When you have 2 weeks off per year (when everyone else in Korea is off) you are kinda screwed.
Haven't you got some pictures of birds to be jacking off to, son?

And what's with EVERY business in Korea taking the same weeks off in summer and winter?
