That's the nature of hush money.
Help others, especially animals. Say what you think, be considerate of others. Appreciate more than deprecate. Teach well, jump on teachable moments. Enjoy Korea as it is, without changing it. Dwell! Yet, at times, change your life for the better. "The most important [thing] is to have a good day."

You hear this a lot. What people fail to understand is that what Germany has done post war is more or less unprecedented in human history. It is not common for the vanquished to repeatedly fall on their sword publicly offering these mea culpas at every turn. Japan isn't Germany. Surely you've lived in Korea long enough to understand that guilt, especially admission of guilt, remorse, forgiveness are seen in a completely different light in this part of the world. Also the denaizification process in Germany was far more thorough then what the Americans did in Japan. You can't leave large portions of the state apparatus in place and expect it to self correct itself completely.

The fact that Japan hasn't aggressively rearmed, has gone out of its way to be a model global citizen, has kept it's pacifist constitution and has by and large refrained from openly glorifying it's actions during its imperial phase, would be good enough in 99% of situations. But then Germany had to come along and perfect the "we were terrible people, we did terrible things, there is no excuse for it" show (and i don't mean that in a pejorative sense at all) and made Japan look like remorseless animals.

I'm well aware 50,000 American military being stationed in Japan since occupation ended has been a big motivating factor for Japan not to act like pricks again, but the fact remains.

    Some good points.
But I'd like to point out that while some people might consider Germany's contrition to be excessive, the sincere abhorrence of their own past has allowed Germany to reemerge as one of the preeminent nations - economically as well as culturally - in their area.   Germany's contrition has essentially allowed them to orchestrate an economic Blitzkrieg of all their neighbours... with Europe's blessing. Japan was by far the most powerful post-war Asian economy, and it was only the deep mistrust and dislike by... well... everyone that prevented them from leveraging that huge advantage to a powerful tool for regional dominance.

Again, I absolutely in no way feel Germany's  contrition excessive, at all. It's just they have done it so well that they will forever be the yard by which others are measured. Many would not be able to live up to that.
And I agree Japan would have done themselves a lot of favors, had they apologized more thoroughly and sincerely.

has anyone seen the korean tv show 구해줘 홈츠? it's a show about some celebrities going to these "nice" apartments and showing of where you can live. the apartments are usually garish or tiny or with a shit layout. the celebrities do that weird over-acting thing where they act like they've just won the lottery, when all they are doing is going into a cramped, undecorated bedroom.

"WOOOOOOW! look it has a tiny rooftop area!!!" -> cuts to studio with more celebrities. "OH MY GOD LOOK AT THAT IT'S A TINY USELESS ROOFTOP AREA" -> insert canned cheering sounds and lots of onscreen text

then it shows the price: one billion, trillion, gazillion won

You mean a Seoul version of MTV's 'Cribs' only in a place where rent is sky high due to population density and lack of arable land?

as with any TV/reality tv show....they are all scripted to make them interesting and I do not understand Korean humor/entertainment at all. I don't like reality tv in general, no matter what country, but I do tend to like travel/food/cooking shows. I think the US equivalent of that show it House Hunters on HGTV, minus the celebrities.

i don't know what cribs is, but they also show places outside of seoul. if they show really amazing houses or unique, quirky places, then cool. or if they helped actual couples/families find their "ideal" home. but they seem to show nothing but celebrities, who do nowt but look through these bog-standard apartments. but it's the weird fake reactions that annoys me most tbh

Sounds like the total opposite of escape to the sun where you see ordinary British couples turn their noses up at amazingly cheap places with swimming pools in Spain. Just watched an episode where they were looking at places for 300 grand in Cosra Rica. 'Yeah, we like the 6 acress of land, 3 en suite double bedrooms and open plan dining/living area the size of a church hall but the 4th bedroom's a bit on the small side and the pool's the wrong shape ' etc..

Haha yeah, totally agree.

Location, Location, Location is a guilty pleasure of mine.  I can't get enough of it but I get so wound up at people who refuse amazing houses based on things that can easily be changed.

yeah i find this mental too. same when they go to australia (on a similar programme). "oh, we felt homesick". ok, give up your huge house with outdoor swimming pool and wages that were double, and go back to your small attached house in birmingham

Yeah, I'm going to trust my money to a bunch of comedians who know nothing about property, interior design and location..

Some of their choices are just garish.

UGH. Today is graduation and all the students left at about 11:30.  2 of my co-teachers randomly told me yesterday that I could leave early today after lunch. Cue today when one asks if I'd put it into Neis....so basically they were informing me that I was "allowed" to use part of my vacations days to leave early on a day with no students...

I was really looking forward to leaving early.
