People have to keep giving money and apologies for something that happened long before they were born for the rest of eternity?
Quote People have to keep giving money and apologies for something that happened long before they were born for the rest of eternity?Germany does it well, why can't the Japanese do it?
You hear this a lot. What people fail to understand is that what Germany has done post war is more or less unprecedented in human history. It is not common for the vanquished to repeatedly fall on their sword publicly offering these mea culpas at every turn. Japan isn't Germany. Surely you've lived in Korea long enough to understand that guilt, especially admission of guilt, remorse, forgiveness are seen in a completely different light in this part of the world. Also the denaizification process in Germany was far more thorough then what the Americans did in Japan. You can't leave large portions of the state apparatus in place and expect it to self correct itself completely. The fact that Japan hasn't aggressively rearmed, has gone out of its way to be a model global citizen, has kept it's pacifist constitution and has by and large refrained from openly glorifying it's actions during its imperial phase, would be good enough in 99% of situations. But then Germany had to come along and perfect the "we were terrible people, we did terrible things, there is no excuse for it" show (and i don't mean that in a pejorative sense at all) and made Japan look like remorseless animals.I'm well aware 50,000 American military being stationed in Japan since occupation ended has been a big motivating factor for Japan not to act like pricks again, but the fact remains.
has anyone seen the korean tv show 구해줘 홈츠? it's a show about some celebrities going to these "nice" apartments and showing of where you can live. the apartments are usually garish or tiny or with a shit layout. the celebrities do that weird over-acting thing where they act like they've just won the lottery, when all they are doing is going into a cramped, undecorated bedroom."WOOOOOOW! look it has a tiny rooftop area!!!" -> cuts to studio with more celebrities. "OH MY GOD LOOK AT THAT IT'S A TINY USELESS ROOFTOP AREA" -> insert canned cheering sounds and lots of onscreen textthen it shows the price: one billion, trillion, gazillion won

Sounds like the total opposite of escape to the sun where you see ordinary British couples turn their noses up at amazingly cheap places with swimming pools in Spain. Just watched an episode where they were looking at places for 300 grand in Cosra Rica. 'Yeah, we like the 6 acress of land, 3 en suite double bedrooms and open plan dining/living area the size of a church hall but the 4th bedroom's a bit on the small side and the pool's the wrong shape ' etc..

UGH. Today is graduation and all the students left at about 11:30. 2 of my co-teachers randomly told me yesterday that I could leave early today after lunch. Cue today when one asks if I'd put it into Neis....so basically they were informing me that I was "allowed" to use part of my vacations days to leave early on a day with no students...I was really looking forward to leaving early.
