Connect 4 Template Edit - Ability to Change Pieces
« on: June 28, 2016, 11:00:30 am »
I edited the Connect Four template to make it possible to change the red pieces to blue.  If you accidentally click on a blue triangle to play a blue piece, you can just click the red triangle to lay a red piece over it.  But before, if you accidentally played a red piece, there was no way to change it without resetting the game (at least to my knowledge.)  Now if you click a red piece, it will change to blue.  This way, if you occasionally play the wrong color piece, as I do from time to time :), you can change it, no matter the color.   ;D

Edit:  See my other post below for a better version of the template.  It allows you to  remove any piece at any time and then keep playing.

Thanks this is awesome! That's always been an issue - so thank you for finally addressing it!

It does seem though that it only corrects it if a blue was laid down in error only - as the red marker is the only one that will appear over it. I guess it's because the red are set to appear in the front over the blue (foreground hierarchy?).

I don't know if there is a way to fix that - just wanted to let you know.

I'll still be using this template for here on out. Thanks again!

There are 2 connect 4 games that I've seen on this site.  One of them does allow you to remove the existing pieces (by clicking on them) if you clicked on the wrong color by mistake.

Thanks for the comments guys.  In hindsight, I realized it would be much easier to have a template like the one maximmm mentioned, and therefore have the ability to just have the pieces disappear upon a click.  I re-edited the template, so now if you click a red or a blue piece it will disappear and you can play a different color.  Now we can make infinite mistakes!  :P

I think you might be talking about my template. I just added the ability to add pictures by simply dragging and dropping image files onto the slide and a standard "fullscreen" sized version.

Please check it out here.

No, there was yet another template -

Yours is pretty awesome though -

I really like the drop animations and sounds.

How you've turned it into a bomb game of sorts (the questions template) is pretty neat, too.  Though the question slides in the question template are broken in more ways than one: hyperlink on the check mark leads the ppt to end the presentation; to get the answer I need to press right key rather than just click on the screen; etc, etc.  It's not difficult to fix this, but I'm surprised no one brought up these problems when you posted it.

Anyways, thanks for sharing.

Because they aren't problems, those are by design. It was a way to get around the PowerPoint 2010 reset glitch. If you play the game from the start it and you press the check mark it will work perfectly fine. However, if you start from the question slide, which you wouldn't do when playing the game with the students, it will simply close.

Ah, interesting.  Another question - when I get to the question slide, I can see the question, but when I click on the screen, no answer pops up.  Instead, I have to press right key on the keyboard to see it.  Is this also by design?

PS.
Some people have noted (and my recently posted pirates game seems to confirm this via lacking any resetting issues) that resetting manifests itself only if the question slides have too many hyperlinks/triggers.  Your question slides don't seem to have too many of those, was resetting still an issue then?

This is a super old post that I didn't see at the time, but I figured I'd answer these questions anyway.
  • I disabled the ability to advance the slide by clicking, because I was worried that an erroneous extra click would cause problems by closing the question slide unexpectedly. However, I restored clicking in the most recent version of the game.
  • The reset glitch isn't triggered by the number of links or animations on a single slide, but the number of slides transitions before returning to a slide. Three transitions cause a reset, even if one of those transitions is back to the original slide. Had I not structured this game the way that I did both the slide where you select the questions and the gameboard slide would continually reset throughout the game.
