Pairs of grade 6's were practicing "giving directions" - where's the post office, etc.
A kid says to his partner, "Go straight, and die."
Gave him a hi-five for that one.

One of my better-speaking 5th grade girls said:

"Teacher, do you know who Sejong is?"

I say: "Sure. He was a king of Korea."

She replies: "He invented Hangul, the Korean language. Do you know who invented English?"

"No, I don't," I replied.

"You don't? Hmmm...well, I want to kill him. I want to make a time machine and go and kill him."

Cute, I thought!

Maybe I should have said Sejong invented English, just to give her a conflicting nationalism complex!

We're doing a lesson on palm reading  for middle school students.  I first have the students name their fingers in English.  Whenever it comes to the middle finger, it is labeled as the "F*** finger, f**king finger."  What got me is when one student said its the "finger bang her finger."  I said good and just corrected them saying its the middle finger.

During a lesson yesterday, I included a picture of a sad looking puppy in one of my powerpoint slides, and upon seeing it, a student shouted, "Oh, delicious!"

During a 20 question style game, students were supposed to get a point for their team by saying "It is a _____."  The answer for this particular question was "moon".  I always let students who haven't talked answer first.  So, one boy who hadn't spoken was encouraged by his team to raise his hand and speak.  The team was trying to tell him the correct answer.  So, almost all of them said, "moon", "moon", "moon", ...

The boy puffed out his chest and with a big smile said, "It is a door!"  (문 or moon being door in Korean).

The exact same happened to me yesterday.

In my advanced after school class, we were debating whether or not the children of rich people should be allowed to inherit all of their parents money.

Student: Lots of money turns teenagers into b____es (bad word for women) and b______s (bad word for men)!!
Me: Um...you shouldn't say those words..
Student: What? It does! Haven't you seen Gossip Girl?

I was inspecting a small artificial rose sitting on the 3rd grade girl's desk

Me: Who gave you the flower?
Her: My boyfriend.
Me: Your boyfriend?! Who's your boyfriend?
Her: That boy sitting at the front (pointing).
Me (to the boy): Are you her boyfriend?
Him: Yes, teacher. Now give her back her flower.

That was me told...

Uh......
My grade 1s... they don't know ANY English....

I was teaching them the numbers, and I pointed at number 9.

Now there's this one kid who always makes up word when he doesnt know what it is.

He raised his hand and was desperately going "OOHHHH OHHH" and wanted to be picked.

Me: Yes Jonghoon?
JH: Bussy!
Me: HUH??
JH: *****!

I just burst out laughing for 3 mins...
I had tears in my eyes...

I didnt want him to say that word around the school so I told him that it was pronounced..
Nine... not P*ssy

When we were doing the washing machine unit in the 6th grade books, I had to do everything I could think of to make it funny. Or at least not as boring as the book makes it out to be.

So, I asked my kids: What do you put in your washing machine?

I name all my kids in class, because there are so many, and I can't pronounce Korean names to save my life!

So, Long Haired Boy (his hair is literally longer than mine) goes: My girlfriend!
Cocky Boy goes: AHAHAHAHA!
Sarah-Teacher: OH NO! That is NOT good!
Cocky Boy goes: It's ok Sarah-Teacher, his girlfriend a DOLL!
At this point I am trying not to laugh.
Smart Boy goes: It sad...
Then they all shake their heads.

Not sure if they practiced this, but it made my day!

Me to the class (during a game): "Ok, quiet everyone! Remember, I choose people who raise their hands and ARE QUIET!"

They quiet down.

Random boy student who just couldn't take it anymore: "ME! TEACHUH!!!!! I am being SO quiet!!!!"

My students had to describe their favourite gadgets for their peers to guess. One of my favourite (though less proficient) students had a go:

Girl: He makes me hot and it's big.
Class: Kim Sangwon (her boyfriend who, thankfully, is in a different class because he would've had an inappropriate comment to follow that)

That's when I remember that I teach 18 year olds...

Often times over the past 10 mos I have been thinking my kids, esp the 3rd graders look like they dying to express themselves to me but just don't have the vocabulary. This term my CT and I took a different approach with the 3rd graders and it's made a world of difference. 1st they understand me better and 2nd they can express themselves better; here's one example of it when I questioned them about their seemingly depressed or sleepy state (basically not very responsive).

Me: Class, are you sleepy or sick?
most students: yes, teacher, sleepy.
Student by herself: Yes, teacher, we're hot, sleepy, and hungry!

Another interaction same class between two partners.
(boy partner is trying to whisper to her what she should said for partner dialog, so his face was really close to hers)
Girl: Move! face! (and then something in Korean)
I love these kids!

This week my students are learning exclamatory phrases beginning with "How" like "How pretty!"

I was pointing at different students and having each one think of a phrase.

Student 1: How nice!
Student 2: How handsome!
Student 3: How ugly!
Student 4: How cool!
Student 5: Oh shit!
