South Korea, the country with the most polluted air among Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development members, is joining a global boom in green finance.

As dirty air stings eyes and throats, pressure is mounting on some of the most heavily polluting industries to find money for cleaner technologies. Energy, power and other borrowers have more than doubled issuance of so-called environmental, social and green bonds to 12.9 trillion won ($10.8 billion) this year from all of 2018.

https://business.financialpost.com/pmn/business-pmn/filthy-air-pushes-south-korean-industry-to-sell-green-bonds

Korea’s particulate pollution is twice the average for OECD member countries, and the average South Korean can expect to lose 1.4 years of life expectancy because of the air quality, according to the Air Quality Life Index’s recent analysis.

Wrong thread.

Unless air pollution makes you happy, I guess. I won't judge.

Korea is going to become more environmentally friendly. That's the good news.

All native teachers in Gunpo are getting axed after Feb.

I just landed a job in Uiwang.

BOOM, still alive in the Anyang area!
The first thing to say is that this is definitely not pyramid selling, OK?

Really?  I'd heard it was getting leaner there but not that you were getting axed.  Welcome to Uiwang pal.  I made the jump from Gunpo when my middle school was cut.

Obviously, this is in the happy as poopie thread but are you annoyed with moving schools?  Or has it happened so often that you're used to it.  Same crap, different place?  :undecided:

I'm getting a bigger apartment. The one I'm in now is small. And I know you have an image of a small apt in your head right now, NO. Half that. haha So that's good.

Also, Gunpo and Uiwang are the same thing, basically, won't affect my social life at all. And I've been at this school for four years, the 3 prior were all one year each, so I had a good run.

I'm just glad I have a public school job, after ALL of us got axed, and especially in the same area.

Good to hear.  After four years, I suppose, a change is nice.  Especially with a better apartment.  Keeping in public school is good too!!  :-*

Thanks a baekman. Little nervous cuz it's middle school but I've been teaching long enough to know that it's not going to be too difficult.

Congrats CO2!

Middle school?  Piece of pie, you'll smash it.  Given the choice, I'd take middle over elementary any day because you can actually have proper conversations with the students.

I made the jump to middle from elementary because after three years I wanted to try middle or high school.  After my first month in middle school I never wanted to head back to elementary but Gunpo had other plans for me.  I don't miss the apathy that can set in with some grade three boys which can be only made worse by a co-teacher who wants you to let them sleep or do nothing, but overall it was good.  I had five co-teachers so things were varied but most of them were helpful and interested.  It was great when they let you just veer off the book and do projects that involve teams and research.  Also, the fact that classes pretty much are done by end of November beginning of December.  It was a whole new world of deskwarming.  And you'll get to have the staff tell you that hilarious anecdote about why North Korea will never invade South Korea.  Hahah, laughing just thinking of the punchline, hahah it's because they're afraid of middle school students.  Whoa Nelly!

Interested to hear that Uiwang still has middle school NETs.  Other than making the trek over from Gunpo I don't anything else about Uiwang schools.

Tonight, I'm watching a lecture from the guy who made the English subtitles for Parasite and The Handmaiden.

It's about how he does them and the challenges they present. Should be interesting.

Yeah, having done translation work in the past, I definitely get that there's a lot that goes into translating movies and documents and such.
Do you stay as literal as possible (and sound like an utter numpty), or do you try to match meaning and register, and if so, how far off script do you go?

If the lecture is at all decent, the highlights might make for an interesting thread here on Wayg.

I'll post some cool stuff tomorrow. Here's a pic.

EDIT 1: I had a question for him. "Do you put any personal flourishes in the movie as a watermark, or step back as Paquet free as possible and be engaging and accurate?"

He said that for the Korean line "Wow, if SNU (Seoul National University) had a degree in forgery, you'd be a master" was to be changed, by Bong Joonho's decision, to either Oxford or Harvard for the Eng subs.

Darcy picked Oxford. Why? Because he was rejected by Harvard many moons ago. hahahaha
