I'm finally reading 'The Godfather' and am thoroughly enjoying it. I'm up to when Don Corleone is making peace with the other families after the shooting of his son 'Sonny'. Kind of book that you hope never ends. I have no idea why I've never picked it up before.

Ha!  I read it in the summer of 1979, not having seen the movie.  I was newly graduated from high school, working a summer job as my church's janitor.

I remember a thing about that summer job.  The last thing on Friday, you wash down the front steps leading to the sanctuary (it's where the preacher shakes hands as everyone leaves after the service).  Across the road, this older gent was mowing his grass, and working on the steep part of it that dropped down to the road below.  He was mowing up and down, instead of side-to-side, as you should do.

So, I went across and offered to do it for him.  He declined, so I went back to steps-washing.  A few minutes later, I noticed him calling to me.  Sure enough, he had cut the FCUK out of his foot, and wondered politely if I could drive him to the hospital.

So, I ran to the church office, and asked the secretary ladies if I could leave a bit early to drive the man to the hospital.  And--I SWEAR THIS IS TRUE--they said NO!  Later, the guy waved to me, hat still on head, as he somehow managed to operate the pedals of his car with a mangled foot.

And that, boys and girls, is (eventually) why I think the Christian church, and established religion in general, is a complete load of bunkum!

PS, welcome back, Rye Ronnie et al!

It is, but it's also true.

I just left out the tiny font.

Thanks Mr C.

Now that's a story worth telling and reading. You need to have a talk with van and give him some pointers

Just finished "The Institution" by Stephen King. As usual, it was fantastic. One of his best novels.

The Philosophy of Modern Song by Bob Dylan. It's a hoot.

Reheated Cabbage by Irvine Welsh. Not the biggest fan of short stories, but some great ones in this collection.

I read The Prince by M. over a series of satisfying bowel movements. I fear that the book is now a biohazard for unwary readers in the future. I hope my poor behavior doesn't result in a breakout of monkey pox.

I just finished reading Going to the Hospital by Anne Civardi. I was really worried for the protagonist at first but I was glad everything turned out ok in the end.

I bought Neuromancer and Snow Crash. Time for some weird cyberpunky satire.

I like a lot of Neal Stephenson's stuff, but Snow Crash was pretty meh inho. It was one of his very first novels, so I guess i ought to cut him some slack for that though.

Neuromancer was amazing. Coined the term "cyber space".

I've read literally *all* of his books. ^^

I read  Diamond Age wayyyyy back in highschool, but I remember liking it. Hmmm. Maybe I'll put it on my reading list. Will probably get a lot more out of it this time around.

I'm currently reading Adrian Tchaikovsky's "Lords of Uncreation".

Adrian is maybe best known for his fantasy novels, but I find that his sci-fi is especially good. "Children of Time" has won a bunch of awards, and is a pretty amazing read... well, at least,  it is if you don't suffer from arachnophobia. A lot of philosophy gets sneaked in there without it being obvious.  It's sequel, "Children of Memory" is also pretty amazing with an interesting take on what defines sentience, but there's a lot of recursion in that book  which, I think, confused many readers.
