Plantains in Korea?
« on: April 20, 2011, 02:29:09 pm »
Anyone know where I can find some plantains? One of my friends presented me with a tostonera as a going away present and since then, I've been itching to cook up some steak and platanos.

I saw some once in a Black Hair store in Itaewon. LOL! I don't know why they were selling plantains in the hair store but they were there.  This was in February.  But, check it out.  Maybe, they sell them all the time.

You're going to have a hard time finding plantains in Korea. Koreans don't know what they are. I've never seen the produce for sell but sometimes African restaurants have them on the menu. They import them every few months but the supply usually runs out fast. If you don't see them in any stores, you should go to an African restuarant to see if they have some and are willing to sell them to you.

Is there other produce that might be hard to find? Obviously, I notice plantains here, but what about yucca or other possible substitutes for plantains? I'm all about creative cooking  :D

I just had Yucca last night for dinner!  Its pretty easy to find in Asian Food Marts.  Plantains a little harder.

Oh really? What food mart did you actually find Yucca in? I haven't seen any in HomePlus or Emart, so I'm assuming the traditional markets? I've shopped around there and haven't seen any there.
