Korean Drivers license in China
« on: August 31, 2015, 05:01:48 pm »

The story is about people getting a Korean drivers license while on vacation because it is cheaper here than in China.

The part that I am interested in is:

"In June, Shanghai discretionally suspended accepting Korean driverís licenses for short-stay visitors."

Does anybody have details about this?  Can I rent a car in Shanghai with my Korean DL?

I did a bit more google-fu:

If you have lived in Korea for 3 months, then you can use a Korean DL in Shanghai.

Can you use the Korean DL on its own in China, or must you have an IDP (International Driving Permit) with it?

Good question.

I'm in China with a Korean driver's license.  I'll ask around.

Actually, JNM's link is current, for Shanghai at least.

International driver's licenses are not permitted in China.  Every driver must be registered at their local DMV after passing Chinese written theory test (for expat driver's license holders).

Written theory test is available in English at certain locations so make sure you find out which one to go to.  Need about a week in advance to schedule the written test.

There are driver's license agencies that can go with you, for a higher fee, of course.

The main document needed is a translated copy of original driver's license which has been notarized by the person who translated it.

A nice app to study with is "China Drive".   It has current test questions.

They also have driver's training companies by Chinese certified trainers in their special cars to get accustomed to Chinese traffic.  I doubt there'd be much English instruction.
