Since this is a ranting thread, my (korean) boyfriend insists on lying to his entire family throughout the entire duration of our relationship that we live together, until we get married. How much of this is cultural and how much is it him just being a coward? I'm so pissed right now. He said if he is honest with his family that we live together/will live together, they'll like disown him. Which I seriously doubt. His family's pretty modern. How hard is it to tell your family that you're an GROWN MAN and you make your own freaking decisions? How long are u comfortable with lying? Jesus Christ.

Girl, I feel you. Im in a similar situation, except if his fam says he can't marry me he wont... His family is quite traditional. We've only been dating a year, but he's all over my facebook so my entire family knows, and should. I know its Korean culture to not really discuss it with fam sometimes unless marriage is in the cards. But like if our relationship has an expiry date I dunno.
My bfs parents pay for everything. They paid for his uni, hagwon, and expenses when he lived overseas. They give him pocket money every month, buy him clothes, a new bicycle and doesn't need to get a part time job or anything until he finally gets this job hes been preparing for (which he's already failed the test for 3 times). They have him wrapped right around their money finger. I wish my family could/would do that! "That is Korean culture" ya,ya.
I love him to death. So much that I would consider marrying him. But he says if they say no he CAN'T because they would essentially cut him out of the fam. He's the oldest son, blah blah blah.
I know its frustrating. You are not alone.

I'm going to rant about some obnoxious group of posters who really want to rant and complain, despite warnings from moderators and distaste from many other members. We don't want you to do it here. You can do it elsewhere. We don't want you to complain that moderators are not doing their job. We definitely don't want you to take over this site and suggest you have the capacity to even pretend you can choose your own moderators. We hope you find a new site to spew your nonsense on and go away.

Don't complain just to complain (rant). Don't start anymore threads about it, don't pretend to start thread on something else while starting threads on it, and please stop long chains of quoting quotes and ranting on threads that aren't intended to be rant threads.

So like, you (troll), RichardTang (troll), Timo (troll), etc (troll)?

That's the "we" right?

Given that people are members of this site and subject to certain TOS, one might expect moderators also have their own conditions to follow.  If the community feels that may not be the case, why is it not okay to voice that opinion? Unless, you are all about censorship and limiting freedom of speech. Which you apparently are, unless of course it is sparkling.

The go away part is the best.  How child-like. Or redneck. Or whatever other groups spew nonsense like that. If you don't like it, you can get out."  Come on. "If that is the peak of your argument.. How is anyone supposed to take that seriously?

Don't like it? Get out.

This forum isn't America, with it's everlasting freedom. And even then, a little meme I read yesterday says it even better: American Freedom *Subject to terms and conditions*.

talking to you is worse than talking to a wall. YOu don't like a good suggestion being repeated at you. Kind of like a child hating the advice of their parent. Think the parents should just forget and ignore about you, and put you in an orphanage. In fact I think that's what I'll do.

Good luck in your endeavors. If you don't like it. Get out.
Open your mind.

Richardtang debating style
- ignore all salient points/arguments in a post.
- write a bunch of random crap.
-maybe add a meme to show originality and humor.

Salient points? Find me one. All I've seen is crap.

Random crap? That's how I feel about yours. Its amazing how perspective changes things right? To you, yours is gold but mine is crap.

- If Richard disagree with a post, tell poster that all opinions are different.
- Tell poster to leave the forum/leave the internet if poster doesn't like Richard's opinions.
- Quit thread if Richard is losing argument.

- So you're saying opinions AREN'T different? That is what you are saying since you don't agree with it right?

- Never said "my opinion". Always said "Don't like this forum, go elsewhere". But glad to know your comprehension is weak.

-I go home, i stop posting. This is my pasttime when I am at school. Go back to it if it's on the front page the next day. Or I just stop responding to people like you after a certain point cause I feel my IQ is going down. This is that point.

Richardtang1991 stills lurks on this thread, even after saying "Don't like it? Get out"... Bizarre.
He also doesn't know what indefensible means.

Anyway, back to this therapeutic thread.
How do you make a Korean, who has no real problems speaking and understanding English, loose all their English comprehension abilities? You ask them a sticky question.

I'm helping my CT draft a test, for our students. After going through the test this was our dialogue:

Me - This test seems a bit hard for the students.
CT - Maybe, I'm a bit worried but I think they'll do fine.
Me - Really? What was the class average for the last test?
CT - About 80%.
Me - Really? 80%? I find that hard to believe.
CT - Why?
Me - About a third of the class don't know their ABC's,  2-3 students might score 80%,
another third would be lucky to score 30% and I have no idea about the rest since they
       never say or do anything.
CT - I don't understand
Me - The students have to write full sentences, in this test, and have a full understanding of the
Key Expressions of the work we've covered. At their current level, there's no way the class
       average would be 80%.
CT - (does a couple of mouth noises)
Me - What's the lowest score they can get?
CT - About 40%
Me - And if the test is blank? (Last year, we had a few blank tests)
CT - 40%
(I repeated my concerns 4X, each time my explanation became progressively more simplified).
CT - I still don't understand.

   I dont respond to you so you decide to bring it back up? I'm sorry. I'll pay attention to you next time~

I hate these threads. I love responding to them. Started off as bad, keep it on front page with enough crap from everyone, and it'll get shut down. Anyways, I'm still on topic. Hard to stay off topic here.

I suppose I can talk about how happy I am with my life with very little to complain, but I don't want to get off topic.

You seem like a deeply conflicted person-

'i hate these threads'...'i love responding to them'

i dont understand why you are here if you hate these threads so much. you are the guy telling people to leave the forum if you are unhappy, but you are still here, spouting your rubbish. what's wrong, no-one to play board games with?

Richard only seems capable of bored games.

  I do like the pun. Yes I am incredibly bored. Lesson plans finished, camps finished, my grading's finished, and exam week. Bored is an understatement. Sadly most sites are blocked at my school

What camp are you doing? I'm very late with prepping mine. Please send juicy bits this way.

How do you make a Korean, who has no real problems speaking and understanding English, loose all their English comprehension abilities?
I see what you did there.  Very clever.

Oops, happens to the best of us ;D

Get out.

You are an odd little troll.

Richard.  As far as I can tell.  Most English teachers here are from countries which generally recognize rights such as freedom of speech.  So, it goes without saying that even in an online "community," (using the term very loosely) comprised of us waygooks, we might expect a similar right to freedom of expression.

Who even mentioned America anyway.

Again and again the if you don't like it leave.  You are a broken record and I don't think you're responsible for even one person leaving these forums out of fear and respect for RichardSoup.

You talk a big game on the internet.  I'd bet this month's salary you can't walk the walk like that out in the real world though.

You and Timo are absolutely the two biggest trolls on waygook currently.  If moderating was fair and unbiased here you'd both be enjoying a higher warning level and some nice mute time. Unfortunately, that just isn't the case which is one of the issues many people have been voicing concern over during the last couple of days. Hence the response to Sejong above that you happily sunk your troll teeth into yet again.

Lol, welcome to the world of dating Koreans, ladies.

I noticed that Western women seem to almost exclusively date Korean men in Korea these days.  Especially since every other sentence sounds something like this: "My Korean boyfriend..." To be fair, a lot of us dudes date local ladies too.

I've pretty much been over it though.

I would wager a majority of foreigners never get to meet their SO's family and friends because they don't even know you exist.  Friends sometimes, family--not so much. We are frankly, quite often a fling.  I'm not saying some waygooks don't marry in--of course that happens.  But I definitely don't think it is the norm.

That's because most Koreans know they will just end up living here and marrying another Korean.

And the fact that they can be pushing thirty having never had a real job, and zero sense of responsibility because they live with mom and dad and have been spending their money for decades--meh. I don't think that's the kind of partner I want anyway. These are the kind of people that demand everything from everyone yet know how to give and do nothing.

How can you date and plan to marry a grown, jobless man that still receives pocket money from his parents?

What do you think will happen when he finally detaches from his parents? Who will he turn to for mummy and daddy attention?

Disaster waiting to happen IMO.
