We are going to be using the following youtube clip to help teach family members.

However my co teacher will get the video edited so that it is shorter and focuses on the key dialogue.

I like the look of dlhopes sticky finger's game but we don't have enough room  :(

This is a Blazing pens game.  I took the template from Ryan and modified it for this class. Put the students into pairs and have them write the sentences in the correct order.  The first team to do it gets 2 points, all teams that complete it get 1. If you have white boards, you can do it on that, otherwise just a sheet of paper should do the trick.

Hello everyone!

If you are using the 4th grade book by Demetra E. Gates, you will noticed that lesson covers many key expressions. I am finding  some of my students are struggling with these various expressions.

Here is a ppt that I borrowed and modified, so that it will cover most  of the key expressions in this lesson. I have also added my student's name to answer the "Who is he/she section?" For example, He is Kim Da Eun. I suggest that you change the names to your students name.

Good luck!

This is a great game but I had to modify it to deal with the fact that I have limited space in my classroom.

Instead of running away when the magic word is said the students race to sit down. The last one to sit down replaces the person who is 'it' (and responding to who is she/he). Before the class we cleared the desks so we had plenty of space for the students.

I demonstrated the game with the Co-teacher and then got some students to join us.

We had two phases one with who is he?, and the second with who is she?

The students enjoyed the game (and it is nice joining in with the students as you monitor the game). My co-teacher said she would be trying this game with her third grade class.

I advise placing the key words such mother, father, brother etc. on the board so students can use this to help them play the game as I noted some students looking towards the TV where I had the key phrases displayed.

It is an excellent game to practice speaking and listening to the key phrases of the lesson.

I have a game called:

Grandpa, Dad and Baby.

Students practice key sentences and revise members of the family.

There are three levels.
Grandpa (children walk around like Grandpa)
Dad (Children walk around) <-everyone starts at this level.
Baby (children squat as they walk)

Each student has a card with a person e.g. Dad, Mom etc.
The go to another student at the same level.
A: Who is He/She?
B: He is ______.
They play rock paper scissors.  The winner grows up, the loser goes down a level. If a student makes a mistake e.g. who is he? (When there is a female person) loses automatically.

The aim is to become a Grandpa and not to be a baby

I have yet to play it with a class and have been advised that it requires some demonstration in Korean by my co teacher. But my co teacher seems quite positive. However I based the game on a game I read about called Zombies, and my co teacher advises me that this game is similar to another Korean game.

In any case the PPT contains a number of family member cards which can be used for other games.

Here's a nice song to sing anytime in the classroom, for any grade level.  But it works for this lesson especially.
You may want to strip the music and the autotiming from the PPT presentation and use the visuals to teach the vocabulary, and also to sing without a soundtrack.
The Song is the familiar "We Are Famiy" by the Pointer Sisters, illustrated with lyrics for lyric/vocabulary learning.
For those of you who may be inclined to raise an eyebrow at having this tune rendered by Pat Boone (on the same album he does a cover of James Brown's "Papa's Got a Brand new Bag" that's even more fundamentally egregious), his diction here is really good, and he changes the lyrics to read "brothers and sisters with me" which is helpful in terms of the lesson.
Mother is the Invention of Necessity

Here are some PPTs for introducing families members and asking how they are. The latter is especially useful as it ties into the last lesson.

I like to use some sort of video to get my students focused before we get into the book and CD... I thought of using the Brady Bunch as a way to ask some questions for an icebreaker or quiz.

Here is a PowerPoint containing the dialogues from Chapter 3. The format is taken from another Waygooker (thanks to him!). Really simple this time, didn't add any pictures.
