Oxford English dictionary~
Quote
A form of sexual desire in which gratification is linked to an abnormal degree to a particular object, item of clothing, part of the body, etc.

An excessive and irrational devotion or commitment to a particular thing:

By the way, "yellow fever" existed way before porn was widespread. It's the exoticism that is the attraction, not whatever you've made up in your mind about porn.  I say this as someone who couldn't be more removed from Yellow fever, by the way.  Live your life and try to stay out of others, is all.
And yeah, this is definitely one thing I overlooked.

Can we have some actual definitions of the words you guys are using? I am really confused.

What is "yellow fever" exactly?

What is a "fetish"?

When I search for "fetish" in the dictionary, I am redirected to "fetishism" because the other definitions don't apply. When I look in dictionary.com, I find:

Psychiatry. the compulsive use of some object, or part of the body, as a stimulus in the course of attaining sexual gratification, as a shoe, a lock of hair, or underclothes.

With that being said, from what I understand about "yellow fever," it cannot be a fetish as a fetish talks about an object or a particular body part. I don't think havng a fetish of a human being in total is really possible, unless you assume that the person is an object.

I promise that I am really looking for clarification. Having an attractio to someone of a different race is not a fetish, nor is it abnormal. Genetically, race means very little. As a species, humans are very homogenous.

Well, that's the thing.  People do objectify others for sexual gratification.  It's not just 'gross' fetishists, either.  I doubt people hooking up at bars for a night of lust are really thinking about the needs and wants of the other person.  They are likely looking for a hot piece of tail to satisfy their sexual needs at that moment.  And frankly, there's nothing wrong with that.  If you're looking for love at 2am in Helios then you deserve to have your heart broken.

For most people it takes much more than sexual gratification to carry on a relationship, though.  So it's unusual for someone to stay with a partner simply because they fulfill some sort of fantasy or fetish.  I mean, it does happen, but I'd say the other person is aware of it i most cases.  If not, that would be dishonest.

Some people will say objectifying people in any way is immoral.  That is silly, we do it every day in situations not involving sex at all.  And many times we want to be objectified ourselves.  If someone objectifies everyone else all the time, then they may be a sociopath.  But the truth is we wouldn't be able to function in society if we didn't objectify people sometimes.  And hey, ever had a sexual fantasy?  Even about a real person?  Well, you objectified them.  You "gross" person, you!

Pretty much this. I've had discussions about the idea with people who hate the idea of yellow fever and it basically comes down to:

"I don't actually mind the idea that people think Asian features are physically attractive but the people that take it further and say things like "Hey there Hanoi honey. Wanna sucky sucky my wonton?" and "I just love how sweet and polite and demure all Asian women are. It's better than the loud-mouth white girls I can't stand." are ****ing disgusting

Basically lots of people say either explicitly gross and racist or implicitly gross and racist things that poison a term that already requires at least a basic level of disarming for some people.

To clarify to all the responses my comments have received. I never said anything about porn being related to yellow fever? That wasn't my comment, please don't attribute it to me. The whole "clutch your pearls" thing did make me laugh though. Clearly because I believe that people shouldn't be treated like objects I am an overzealous christian. Do you even know what you're saying?

Anyway to explain: a fetish involves an object so when a person fetishizes another person it is essentially treating that person as an object. Which is why it is a lot more reprehensible that an actual object related fetish because most of the time those fetishes don't harm anyone. Hope that helps everyone understand!

The overuse of makeup and baggy clothes worn by women here kinda cured me of any risk of yellow fever.

It's not a hard to find men who view Korean women as objects to use for their pleasure.

While having a preference for Asian women is not a fetish, full blown yellow fever goes beyond that, in my opinion.

I think people are using the term "yellow fever" in a different way than you are. If you don't mind, could you please define yellow fever for me? Thanks!
