Middle School Activity Class - Create your own band
« on: April 08, 2011, 09:42:58 am »
This was an activity class I did with my 2nd and 3rd graders a few weeks ago. I started by showing them a video clip of the Black Eyd Peas performing 'I Gotta Feeling' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aSbKvm_mKA

It seemed to grab their attention as they all like music and it's a fairly catchy song (My kids didn't know it - but we're in a tiny agricultural 'village' in North Gangwon-Do). I then gave them a Powerpoint Presentation about the Black Eyed Peas (I made some of it up granted - but I didn't think the content re: B.E.P was all that important!) and then divided the class into groups of 3 or 4, gave them A3 paper, crayons and encouraged them to make their own band / group. I made them present their newly formed band to the rest of the class before finishing. We ran out of time in the first class so allowed them time at the start of the next class to finish it. It seemed to be a hit. Maybe it will work for you.....

This is pretty cool idea. :D I've just covered music genre's with my after school class, I may now try this sort of project over 2 or 3 lessons and see what they come up with.

Did you give them some sample songs for their band to use, or get them to totally make up their own song titles?
