Sink that Ship!!

This lesson plan was made up for the Middle school activites book page 12, where the students are taught how how create a sentence with make/made, a noun and an adjective. Although if you change the two slides with the english content in them, it can be adapted for whatever topic you are doing.

Aim: After teaching the students whatever english topic you are on, this ppt is designed for them to engage with it in an interesting way.

Game: Objective: Get the answer correct and you can deal  one damage to another teams ship, or do one repair to your own ship.

Background on game: In my third grade class there are usually 35-40 strudents, divided into 7 tables, and thus seven teams. In this game the students choose a type of ship which can take four hits. They look at the question and write down their answer on a plastic sheet/ laminated sheet, then hold up their answers.
The team that gets the answer correct can do one damage to another team, or one repair to their own ship. So when a team gets damage you click on the mini icon of their ship on the bottom of the main slide page, and when they get to four, they are knocked out of the game.

Playing the game: Slide one explain how to play the game to the kids. On slide two, they choose one of the seven pictures hyperlinked to one of the boats/ships, clicking on the picture of their ship brings you back to this page. Then when the teams are chosen, click on the arrow to bring you to the questions slide, on slide 10. On slide ten, the teams have to look at the questions and then write their answer down on a piece of laminated paper, which can be wiped clean. Then by clicking on the icons on page 10 and 11, this brings you to the main game page, slide 12. Where to go back to the question slide you were on just click on the icon that was on that page, on the bottom of the slide. Whilst to show the damage done to a ship you just click on the mini-cions of the ship on the bottom of slide 12, ie descending order, top mini-icon = 1 damage, bottom mini- icon = 4. Then to get back to the main ships slide, click on one of the explosion pictures.

Attached to this post is the ppt, and the sound files for some of the damaged ships slides

So just adapt this ppt for whatever topic you are doing. I also want to say this is a great website, whose generous contributions from other teachers have given me a lot of good ideas, so I thought I should reciprocate!!

Thanks for putting up your hard work!

I'd like to know if you've taught this lessons yet, and how it went over. I will admit the first thing I thought of when the game was "sink that ship" was the Cheonan incident...  I've been wary of navy-oriented games since that happened..

Thank you, I think because a good bit of time has passed it will be out of their memories, and unfortunately other calamitous events have  occured after it. Also my co-teacher and I will be implementing it next week, however we did do a variation of it before, and it went quite well.

I'm glad it "passed" the CT review - maybe I'll be able to implement a Battleship game here at my school again soon... apparently it was a favorite before international incidents. :)
