English Language Korean News Websites
« on: April 17, 2014, 11:37:07 am »
Hello,

Could anyone tell me of decent Korean news websites in English, please? I know of The Korea Times and The Korea Herald websites but I wondered if there were any others worth using, to keep up with current affairs in the country.

Thanks very much  :azn:

www.koreabeat.com is good. They translate trending articles into English, including the comments from Koreans who read the articles. They don't do every story, just ones that are trending with Koreans.

You can usually get the big stories, but there's usually a little bit of a lag.

I like KoreaBang for the lolz http://www.koreabang.com/

Why does it bring the lulz?

It has silly sections and the like, but also other sections like the 'lady gate' section on 'bad women with bad etiquette in the subway' is funny in a shake your head, dark humour way.  I also like the translated comments from netizens from the sites they lift the stories from, naver etc. They are usually terrible. I can only imagine  bitter 20+ guys, fresh out of the army, hating on waygooks for taking all their jobs. Some of the comments are beyond conservative. You can, or I can, only laugh at the narrow-mindedness.

KoreaBang also has way out there stories.. or unusual stories that don't make mainstream or make it back to the foreign community. And granted some stuff on there is serious.  But a lot of the time I'm laughing, possibly in a black humour/schadenfreude way.

Also, some of the stories are just funny. I mean come on, who doesn't love smoking, drinking, gambling monks?

This is the link to the Hankyoreh, the left-leaning (sometimes Pro-NK) paper. It gets high ratings from Korea press agencies and readers, and they are a great place for investigative writing, similar to the Joongang. They don't do as much topical stuff as the Herald and Times do.

This is the Dong-A Ilbo English newspaper site. Right-leaning, I think. They also have a TV network Channel A, which is said to show sketchy stuff but it got great reviews. I haven't seen much of it as it's a cable network.
This paper has an interactive weather map and world time chart. Other than that, it's not particularly special or worth more than a visit a month.

This site covers business and diplomatic channel news. Also has links to a lot of useful info, mostly Seoul area related. It has been fading for awhile now, so visit now if you need to because it might not be around much longer.

Similar to the Hanky, it is left-leaning. Mostly topical stuff, and has a handy Korean dictionary on the right hand side. I think it is geared towards Koreans learning English.  They have some translated cartoons as well.

These are all the Korean-run English news sites that I can think of. If you want foreigner-run English news sites, then I can recommend a few of those too.

Many thanks for all of those links. That's plenty for me to have a look through for now.

Have a good day  ;D
