The Grand National -
« on: April 11, 2014, 08:39:28 am »
I was looking for some recent event to base a lesson around , that showcased aspects of western culture.  I chose the 167th Grand National.

I conducted these lessons this week and they went across well with MS G1 AND G3

A lesson plan is attached but basically the lesson is.

3 mins lead in.
12 mins listening exercise and gap fill. Incorporating class participation to clarify content is being understood.
20 mins rearrange the words game.
10 mins to enjoy the spectacle of the race and have a sweepstake.

One thing I would do differently is print the sweepstake on coloured paper so it is easier for them to track their horse.

Although the race has been run and the proverbial horse has bolted, this could be delivered any time as the students/teachers had no real concept of the Grand National before this lesson so the fact it was run last weekend is largely irrelevant.

Nice idea. Luckily there was no serious injuries in this years race too. I'll try this out soon. It could work great as a post mid term class. Thanks.

Nice lesson. Thanks for sharing it. I agree that it can be used anytime - I'll be amazed if my students have heard of the Grand National, let alone know the result.

I'm a big racing fan, so this lesson is great. I might do the same, or a similar lesson, around Derby day or Royal Ascot (where the race at the end wouldn't be as long).

My only concern is that most people always seem to associate racing very closely to gambling (and of course they are closely related) so is it possible that co-teachers might get uneasy about introducing perceived gambling to the classroom?

FWIW I managed to get a bar-owner in Daegu to stream the race on the computer behind the bar and project it onto the big screen. I didn't back the winner though!

Did this yesterday at my vocational equine high school.  It was a giant hit.  Thanks so much!
