what's (43+9) times Zero????
« on: April 09, 2014, 02:49:08 pm »
So, I can't get this question right to validate that I'm not a bot. Neither "0" or "zero" works. I may be a bot after all. :)

Have you  tried 42?  I know that is the answer to life, the universe, and everything...

to validate you are not a bot?  is it a captcha?

if it is a captcha, then entering "0" is wrong.
you have to enter exactly what is there.

if it says (43+9) times Zero

then you must enter    "   (43 + 9) times Zero "
You only live today once. You wont get a second chance. You wont get to live it twice. So make the most of it.

Webmaster needs to check that one out. still couldn't get it after more than 10 tries when I signed up the other day. LOL. I got the other three. What's the square root of 81? How many fingers on both hands? are you a bot (type "yes" or "no" without the quotes)? LOL. I think someone just screwed up on (43+9) times zero.

No, it's one of the questions that come after the captcha.
But I'm so glad someone asked this. I was driving myself nuts trying to figure this out after 0 wouldn't work.
Yes, that should definitely be checked out.

Some of the questions are just worded awkwardly, too. There's one about the number of fingers on your hands with such weird wording that I wasn't sure whether to answer 5 or 10.

Plus one that just looks like a word salad ending in "cyborg harpy" that I'm not convinced was produced by a human  :lipsrsealed:

edit: and this one's really pedantic, but since the bulk of the users here are English teachers we should be better about this: there's a question asking about the capito of Canada, which I guess would be Parliament Hill?

This question was infuriating. I almost gave up joining the site because I got it everytime!

The answer is clearly 0. I think, emphasis on think, I got it right by answering 43 (as in 43 + [9x0]). Although I could be remembering that wrong.

I had a 2 math questions when I joined. It kept telling me the answers were wrong.
I tried numbers and letters.
I even used a google calc; I lowered my thinking to, "maybe I'm just dumb."
Same answers.

was irritating, someone needs to work on their math.

If the answer is 43, it needs to lose the parenthesis. They should rewrite it as 43+9 times Zero!!!!! Arrrrrrgh. I almost punch my screen out!lol

I just about had a fit when I saw that while authenticating my messages. I thought "maybe it's spelling it that way so a bot can't google "capital canada" and use the first result... if they are sophisticated enough to do that."

I do infrequently see the word "capitol" used in the cases where country's seat of government and largest city are different places. It doesn't seem nearly common enough to justify the usage through popularity alone but if someone did it intentionally and you know the difference between capital and capitol then it almost seems legitimate.

I had a bit of a laugh when reading some of the comments posted on this thread.  :afro:

To be honest, I had very little choice in the matter.  I had to change all of the security questions recently, and I think I will incorporate this as part of the maintenance routine done for the website.  You guys didn't get to see the spam the mod team had to go through, it was getting bad.

The problem is similar to dsb34b's suspicions about bots attempting to answer security questions, and bypassing spam prevention tools.  A lot of websites face these type of spam issues to some degree.  This can be done with the use of Natural Language Processing (NLP), although it isn't a simple thing to program.  They can also be undertaken in a more directed manner using far simpler code.  I'll avoid getting into technical details, and simply say yes, it was done deliberately as it could confused NLP measures (methinks anyway), and it would invalidate the simpler method.

"Do you not eat space goats?" is a silly question for instance, however to a human brain the oddness of the wording and concept is easily understood.  At least, I find it to be the case, but if it is really causing confusion then perhaps I'll simply work with odd concept questions, and keep wording normal.  If it's mostly your inner English teacher reacting to the bad wording, then I'll keep it, as silly as it is.

I am not so sure why 0 didn't work for you however for the math question.  I'll test this tomorrow (well, today I guess since it's 4am here).

Thank you for bringing these concerns to my attention.

with regards to the maths question: perhaps it's due to someone writing "O" (i.e., a capital letter O) instead of "0" (i.e., the numerical symbol for zero). whether this mistake is on the programming side or the side of the person trying to answer the captcha i'm not sure, but perhaps something to look into  :afro:

We've come to that conclusion. The security question is not accepting that answer.

I've changed the question with a +1 so that it does not occur again, as the answer is 1.  The value listed was "0" (integer value, without the quotes), so I am not sure why some people were getting errors.
