EPIK - Exit Allowance - Public to University
« on: February 25, 2014, 08:15:06 pm »
I will be transferring from Public School to University this month. Will I be due the exit allowance?

Epik 2013 March contract

The issue is dealt with in Article 11 of the contract but is not 100% clear based on the above circumstances.

Article 11 (points summarised):

1) [Talks about entrance allowance]

2) Employee entitled to exit allowance of 1,300,000 if completing the contract successfully.

3) If Employee changes POE no exit allowance will be paid

4) [Talks about entrance allowance if on F-series visa]

As I read it, should you change from one Public School to another you do not receive the exit allowance (renewal allowance instead). However, it does not clearly state what happens in the event of moving to a University but still residing in Korea.

As the name suggests, the exit allowance is to pay for your flight home. No flight. No allowance.

In my experience, you get the exit allowance regardless of whether you stay in Korea or not. If you complete your contract you are entitled to it. Your school doesn't care if you're staying or not, they will just deposit the money along with your final paycheck.

You get exactly what your contract says (there are hundreds of different, 'EPIK' contracts). If you summarise yours, we don't know what it says and can't give you any advice.
The Ks once gave me five minutes notice. I didn't know what to do with the extra time.

I don't think you're entitled to it.  An exit allowance is not a cash bonus.  It's reimbursement for a flight up to 1,300,000 won.  Still, some schools might just give you that in a lump sum if they're not too particular about their money.  I'd try to get it - why not?  Even if you don't, be happy that you're moving to a uni :)
