Is there an easy way to prepare a pomegranate?
« on: February 11, 2014, 08:23:08 am »
I absolutely love the taste of the seeds and the juice, but I'm really struggling getting it out of the flesh.

I've tried using a knife and/or and a spoon, but I tend to splash lots of juice and it takes absolutely forever.

Am I missing a trick or something?

i was always told the seeds are poisonous?
something about a Greek lady ate 7 seeds and had to spend 6 years in Hades or something?

my "myth" may be off. but is there truth to that? the seeds being poisonous?

as for "how" to eat it, i cut it in a star shape, from top down (not in half through the middle). this tends to follow the 'wedge' shape.  i then strain them, and drink the juice. OH SO GOOD
You only live today once. You wont get a second chance. You wont get to live it twice. So make the most of it.

This is my favorite vid on how to open a pomegranate, mostly for the commentary:

Cut it however you want (I just cut it in half) the important part is when you start getting the seeds out make sure you do it in a large bowl of water. The seeds wont bust and the juice will be contained.

A pomegranate deseeder works perfectly. It's a lot like the wooden spoon/ hand method except you aren't touching it with your hand. For a while HomePlus was giving them out for free with pomegranates.

I'm with larissap on this one -- I always prepare my pomegranates by standing at the sink and holding the pomegranate underwater. That way, no staining, and the pith floats to the top and is easily strained off. Then I just keep the arils in a plastic container in the fridge.

Also, I kind of enjoy doing it, so I don't mind that it takes a few minutes. It's relaxing and satisfying for me. :)
