Trending: Videos of Koreans eating lots of food

According to this article, mok-bang (an amalgamation of the Korean words for "eat" and "broadcast") are becoming popular. They're videos showing Koreans eating an obscene amount of food for hours at a time.

Anyone heard of this before? Are these videos actually popular... and WHY?

Yeah this really isn't new, Kotaku are a few years behind I think.  I think it's kind of interesting, some say it's from people not liking to eat alone.

No surprises here. From what little Korean television I glimpse, if it's not a drama or a variety show, it's people eating.

I also found that on Kotaku.
Asked my students about it.
Apparently Afreeca TV is really popular.
There are tons of people recording mok-bang shows.

There are also "VJ's" but they don't play videos, all they do is talk, and viewers can send in questions.
One of my students gave 140 000 won to on VJ named K/Kei/Kay?? just because she thought he was handsome.
She said she watched his show everyday. He plays the guitar and sings and talks about himself, and she sends in questions and sometimes her questions get picked, etc.
I asked her what she got for that 140 000 won donation and she said he gave her his Kakao talk ID and a voice memo, saying "hello and thank you for your money"

My students also told me that "The Diva" (the girl who can eat for two hours straight and then talk for another two hours after that) exercises the whole day before filming herself eating in the evening.

And my co-teachers know about it too. They said that "The Diva" has a special stomach (hyper metabolism) so she can just eat and eat and eat!

some say it's from people not liking to eat alone.

Yeah, I agree. My co-teachers said the same thing. People who live alone want the company of others. So they watch mok-bang to not feel so alone, as the presenter is eating and talking and they are eating and listening.

Asked my students if I recorded myself eating would they watch my show? 70% said yes. lol!

Yes, this is a trend. It's been around or a few years but it is still going strong. The normal term refers often to those traveling foodie shows, but now people think of internet shows.

The mokbang is very popular. Take a look at the site 아프리카TV (Afreeca TV). Most of the broadcasts are for gaming or sexy girls talking about random things, but there are a handful of celebrity mokbang broadcasts. If you can read enough Korean, you can sign up! (I did...hahaha. I watch them to practice my slang Korean.) The most interesting (perhaps disturbing?) thing is that if you are popular enough, people PAY you to eat more. They can send small donations of money through the chat, and the webcammer can use the money to pay for all the food. There are two popular female mokbang broadcasters who regularly pull in over 100k won a night. Of course, one has to wonder how they stay super tiny after eating enough burgers and chicken for four people. There's another REALLY popular buff guy who eats like a MACHINE. I can't watch him eat because seeing how much food he eats makes me feel ill. He's cute though. :P

Yes! in Korea their eating culture is group-oriented but due to the stressful nature of work and young adulthood changing, more and more people are living alone. There's also a new TV show called "I live alone" (나 혼자 산다) where celebrities live in single apartments and record their lonely life. To people from other countries it seems bizarre--I mean, I have lived and eaten alone for years, and I'm totally fine! but in Korea it's still a strange and curious activity. A lot of the hardcore mokbang viewers are very "weird" people who are desperate for interaction, as well as bored students.

If you recorded a mokbang as a foreigner you'd have hundred of viewers!! go for it!!!

Weird. My school firewall won't let me access the article, but it reminds me a bit of Man vs. Food and all those other reality food programs from the states. There are hot dog eating contests and competitions featuring everything else in the refrigerator, but I wouldn't want to be stuck having to eat several pounds of kimchi . . .

Sounds like a cash cow for the foreigner who can eat like a horse and speak Korean well enough to interact with the public. Shame I'm on a diet.

LOL.  Oh no! I live all by myself in my studio apartment, too!  How strange and interesting my life must be to some of these people.  The thought of eating without any company must be so...foreign.

It's funny seeing Kotaku mentioned on a non-gaming site so the conversation doesn't immediately devolve into "why the **** is Kotaku even posting about this?".

Just from reading the posts here this makes me think of a 21st century kind of Speakers Corner. Speakers Corner allowed people to film short little blurbs in front of cameras and mics stationed around certain cities (some were private booths and others were open to people being taunted in the background and stuff). Eventually popular characters sort of emerged and it was kind of an interesting thing that the internet basically completely destroyed.

lol someone needs to let that Sam Hammington guy know about this. He loves eating and getting attention from Koreans, so perfect combo. It wouldn't be any worse than the second-rate tv crap he's usually on anyways.
Take that apologists!

That's interesting! I thought this was all very bizarre, but I guess we come from a culture where being alone (whether that means being single or being without company) is not a problem, and is sometimes valued.

yeah, I agree with you. I mean, if you eat lunch by yourself back in your home country, no one thinks anything of it. But if I eat lunch by myself here, the teachers get very paranoid about it, even though they don't even speak to me while we are eating. They will all move / force other teachers to sit with me so that I am not "alone".

I've never understood the whole "getting a close up" of people shoveling food into their mouths here. You'd think it's food porn or something. And no, I don't want to watch you eat and see your silver fillings.
