So I'm not how this should be asked... Sightseeing question
« on: December 09, 2013, 11:41:58 am »
So I'm still pretty new to Korea. I keep meaning to travel but I would rather travel in a group with others to enjoy my experiences more.

Is there a website or group that is just about foreigners meeting up and, I guess, seeing the sights and traveling around Korea?

I'm near Masan and Changwon so I have access to trains and bus stations.

I just like going places with people and not being all on my lonesome. The other foreigners in town leave in March so I'll be the one showing the newer people around.

Does this sound silly? I dunno. I like reasons to travel and since I started late I didn't get an orientation.

If I were you I would start with trying to find the facebook group for your city. I occasionally see newbies post in the group for my city looking for travel companions. Normally they will introduce themselves and then list some interests (hiking, history, eating, etc) and maybe list a couple of things they want to see.

It's not a silly question at all, personally speaking, road trips/tours around Korea were a great way for me to transition into life in Korea..

I cosign with Philby1985's suggestion of checking out different tour groups in Korea on facebook. You can start with Enjoy Korea (Daegu based) and Adventure Korea (Seoul-based I believe).  I know it's not super convenient, but I'm not aware of any tour groups based in the areas you mentioned (they might actually exist tho, so check it out).

Enjoy Korea does often arrange buses originating from Busan though (depending on demand) if that helps you.

Best of luck!

I guess I never thought of asking on those groups. I'm a member of Changwon Expats and Masan Expats. Hmmm.

Thanks for the heads up! I just know that I wanted to travel to Seoul with people. Or Daegu... or Jeju... or anywhere .

I just sometimes feel weird like I'm going up to people and saying like ... oh hey, I just met you and I may seem crazy... but I want to travel so come with me maybe?

...I just awkwardly laughed at myself for that.

Hey there,

First off, fantastic ID, Tardisgirl!

Second, I'm take part in Couchsurfing.org , it's a good way to meet people who are traveling and or looking to make local friends. It's what got me started on my feet here in Korea. You can sign up there and check out if there are people willing to travel and or meet up to make friends. Mostly used by travelers, as the name suggests it's for people who are looking for a place to crash for a night or two and those offering their couch or space. Though, I haven't stayed over people's couches I just go to the group meets and meet up with other people who want to go to places I wanted to go to with a friend or two.

I've made pretty good friends from Seoul, Busan and Jeju through this site. As well as travelers from around the globe. Just check it out.

You can also try other almost similar sites like meetup.com or as mentioned above look out on facebook for group pages around your area.

Haha nice. It does feel awkward, asking or offering, really. I'll offer anyway - if you want to meet up in Seoul for some sightseeing, I'm about an hour and a half out and can meet you there. I'm not much for hiking or clubbing, but I like heading to the museums and art districts.

haha.   good one :)
I'd rather spend 1000 winters in Korea than have to deal through one more summer.

I'm not into clubbing myself but I really wanted to visit the museums and historical sights. So that would be awesome!

It can definitely be daunting but in general, expats have all been in the same boat and are pretty friendly to newcomers. Post in the Changwon expats group and people will invite you out for drinks or dinner - start there and then find some people who you'd like to travel with! Also worthwhile to go to O'Briens and just talk to people, including Austin, the owner. The bar staff are great and will happily introduce you to some of the regulars.

Send me a message if you're ever in Gimhae or Jangyu and I'll be happy to come and meet up!
