"Would you rather?" activity
« on: November 04, 2013, 02:21:06 pm »
Here is a simple but very generative "would you rather?" activity I made. There is a worksheet that I've included. I have the kids read the questions in the ppt, write down their answers, then read their answers out loud.

It's been a pretty good hit with the kids so far. There's enough crazy, off the wall questions in there to keep them entertained for at least 40 minutes. It can easily cover a whole class period but I usually add a warm up in front of it.

I hope this helps someone!

Thanks! I like your questions!

I have done something similar too for a lesson and found it worked really well.

Some other question ideas I used were...

'Would you rather get $1 million or meet EXO?' (good for girls)

'Would you rather have no smart phone or shave your head?'

'Would you rather be a doctor or a model?'

I also did an extra activity so they got to produce the language where they made their own 'would you rather' questions and asked the rest of the class.

My students resist writing pretty hard but we had fun with this lesson.  I love that it's ready to go off-the-shelf.  Clear and with engaging questions.  Thanks.

Dumped my original plan for this for this afternoon's fifth and sixth grade discussion. Took a bit of work explaining how it worked, but they loved it. We didn't finish, and they asked to play it next time. Thanks!

I'm glad it has been helpful to you all. A few of my classes didn't finish either so this lesson will be making a reappearance at some point.

Brilliant thank you. I'm teaching yet another "would you like" lesson. I do believe they've had it every year since 3rd or 4th grade. I've been looking for a way to change it up and this is perfect. Thanks a bunch!

A few of the questions I added:

Would you rather have blue skin or duck feet?
Would you rather eat only pizza every day or never eat pizza again?
Would you rather visit the hottest place on Earth or the coldest place on Earth?

I didn't have them write the answers for the extra questions, we just discussed them as a group. We played this over two days, and it got everyone talking. Thanks again!

Thanks for the awesome lesson! I was stuck on what to teach my middle schoolers this week. They were a little reluctant to write, but they enjoyed the craziness of it. I stuck the questions in a power point game and forced them to actually speak by answering the questions for points. Worked like a charm!

I made this lightning-style game to practice the "I would rather..." structure.

It's an easy game but the explanation is tough.  One team makes a line going toward the screen.  The first student turns their back to the screen.  The next student in line reads the question.  They want to elicit the correct answer from the guesser, so they should change their voice or face to tip off their teammate.  If they guess right they get a point.  Either way, after the guess, the guesser goes to the end of the line.

It worked well for my second and third grade.  A little bit of silliness and movement.

I'm always trying to think of good "would you rather"s that I haven't already used. This is great. Thanks!

Fantastic activity, went over a riot with my 2nd grade middle school kids.  Even the shy ones started participating, and I got some great responses.  My absolute favorite was a very clever middle school boy, who said, "I would rather be poor but handsome, because then I can marry a rich ugly woman!"

Kid's gonna be alright.
