"My Seoul, Our Seoul" read it phonetically...
« on: October 23, 2013, 08:15:15 am »
Interesting story...

http://www.foxbusiness.com/2013/10/21/with-psy-and-currency-swaps-south-korea-grabs-global-influence/

Quote
In the 1990s, red faced officials withdrew the "My Seoul, Our Seoul" motto when told that a phonetic reading rendered it laughable to English speakers.

A recent Korean food promotion overseas by the government twinned K-Pop stars with "Energizing Persimmon", "Romantic Mushroom" and "Sexy Red Pepper Paste", among others and was met with bemusement.

That food ad campaign is so bad. Lol at the website: hello america let's talk about product of korea. Ok but mushrooms, milk, strawberries, apples, coffee, etc are not "korean". I am pretty sure the rest of the world knows about these things. What was the point of this?

The food slogans are silly, but I don't hear what is wrong with "My Seoul, Our Seoul". Is it just because it sounds like the British pronunciation 'arsehole'? Would Americans hear that?

마이서울, 아서울 read in english with a typical korean accent would sound like "my seoul, ah seoul"...or rather, "asshole".

Or, as our Commonwealth kin would say, "Arsehole".

Ugh. Nothing in that photo looks appealing, all the way down to the jacked-up thing they did to the US flag on his shirt.

Anyway, saying in "Our Seoul" in English doesn't always result in "arsehole". I pronounce "our" the same as "hour". :azn:

I could have had a million guesses and never got there. Thanks for clearing it up. Still, that's kind of a reach.

Why wasn't the phonetic pronunciation 아워 서울?

Why wasn't the phonetic pronunciation 아워 서울?

Because it's what foreigners make of it when they read it.  They recognize what it sounds like.

Kind of like my classmate in high school... Mike Hunt.

I agree! I would have gone with 아워서울 like another commenter mentioned.

Why wasn't the phonetic pronunciation 아워 서울?

Unless I'm deliberately repeating for somebody who asked me 3 times already to repeat myself, I generally pronounce the word "our" similarly to "are"

Since the slogan is FOR English speaking people, of course it wasn't written in Hangeul. It was written in English. And at least some people pronounce "our" as "are". That's why the phonetic for THAT person is more akin to 아서울

(personally, I pronounce that part of the slogan more as 아솔... making it sound even worse in my head)

Hahahaha.  :P I was hardly able to keep it in, reading through this. As soon as I read the title, I got it. I'm surprised surprised so many people don't use "arsehole" or wouldn't think of it. Anyway...

I think they must have hired a pervert for the latest food slogans. Romantic mushroom? I remember catching some of my students drawing male anatomy in their books, and they tried to tell me it was just a mushroom  I wonder if that's a popular euphemism like red chili peppers are? Speaking of which, the whole sexy red pepper paste is rendered even more naughty in that context. Oh dear...

I do wish they'd just hire some real native speakers to take care of their PR...ㄱ_ㄱ

That is probably one of the worst Photoshop jobs that I've seen in a long time.

Yeah, those Korean marketers should hire better graphical editors.  :P

Speaking of perversion in media (not that Korea would be the only country where this happens)...

Have you heard that Korean song with the two guys singing a duet where the play on words in Korean is "Penis... Vagina... Penis... Vagina?"
