My kids also really like this phonics chant:
http://www.supersimpleabcs.com/videos/index.htm
They always call out "goodbye!" to the bee/soccer ball/witch at the end. It's short and broken into three parts, so it's usually something I throw on when I'm going to switch up activities as a signal that we're doing something different now.

I would highly recommend the "EFL phonics book" for a coursebook. It's rather step by step. They even have worksheets for it already prepared. It would take you a long time to finish it all. In between lessons, you could fit in some language functions/songs/cultural games day.

Easy Phonics Worksheet Templates

Every week I had to make 2 phonics worksheets for my 1st and 2nd grade classes. I got tired of using the same old ones off the internet so I made a few templates that i reused throughout the year. The kids liked them and they never got bored. It's a mix of listening, reading and writing skills. Some are double sided but most are one page.

I realize it's a bit late posting these now but hopefully someone will find them useful in the future.

Here are some more phonics and early reading workbooks / worksheets. I don't have anything that will make a multi-page pdf, so each book is its own rar file.

Steve Holt!

OK, to actually contribute, this year I plan to use these workbooks and use the online resources on starfall for the phonics portion of my after-school grade 1/2 class.

Very nice.  I do have one question.  On the SH document one of the pictures is a stack of money.  I'm not sure what it's suppose to be if it starts or end with the sh sound.  Can you please clarify this for me.

Try these:

Simple and to the point.

^mostly avoids the ga-ba-pa, and is amusing to younger students.

Slow but clear - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BELlZKpi1Zs

Better song, two parts - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQZ3YH4wwqw

And for when they get a bit more advanced -   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGjQn0IkpUU&feature=related  (I can't even do this!!)

Hooked On Phonics always have fun songs for letters of the alphabet.  Even if they move quickly, they are still a good opener to a lesson or change of pace.

Yeah!  If we could put all the phonics stuff onto a Grade 1/2 thread like we do for 3rd-6th grade that would be so helpful.

Maybe even a thread for each letter/phonic sound...

Too complicated...?  I hope not.

Thank you so much Bicky!  That's exactly what I was looking for.  That first song is perfect and the sounds are very clear.

Eggplant - I plan to use Starfall with all my afterschool classes.  They are redoing the computer lab to be part lab part english so I will split my class in half and have them working on the computer using Starfall for half the class and then switch.

Don't thank me! Thank Daejeon! He is the creator of the game! I just put the information in that was needed for the lesson. I am in AWE of what Daejon (I believe his name is Shane) can do! Its AWESOME! And please, if you do use the game, make sure that anyone you pass it on to, or share it with is aware that the game was made by him. I'm big on giving kudos where its earned, and he definitely earns it BIG time!

here are my favorite ABC and Phonics songs.  just go to youtube and search "koomakids".  all of his videos are awesome, especially the "Color Robot" video because the kids like touching the corresponding part of their body along with the robot in the video.

ABC Song . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jhecvfbi5ZQ

i don't know what it is but some of my 1st graders die laughing when they see the smiley face guy on the screen.  the first few times i would only play the slow part of the video, but after a while we made it to the faster ones.  they love the fast versions because it's like a competition/race for them.

Phonics Song (but really Chant) . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8beOsDz3ygg

i really like this one because it's simple, but still interesting.  it also picks up speed which builds excitement for the kids as well.  one of my classes started their own game one day where they race to say the name of the picture in English at the end.  the repetitons made this especially fun for them ("cat! dog! cat! dog! . . . monkey!).  also they like doing hand motions/pantomime to the song.  the only thing i don't like is that it doesn't cover all the letters and there's no part 2 like the title suggests.

I don't use a book but I do use the workbook for Fun Fonix at www.mes-english.com - look for the Phonics menu shoice and then look for the Fun Fonix link

To assess students you can see if they can read any of the dolch words - I use the assessment sheets at bogglesworld  http://bogglesworldesl.com/dolch/assessment.htm

For first and second grade you could just concentrate onvocabulary development and phonics

For my youngest classes, I use http://www.kizclub.com/.  They have many learning/activity combinations, which works well for this age group.  It means more cleanup after but, given the age, there's probably going to be more cleanup in any case.

This one was a particular favorite of the kids:  http://www.kizclub.com/phonicsactivities.htm.  It's a word worm where you change the first letter to get a new word.  They have them for various words ending (ell, ing, at).   I also found that, for the most part, I don't even need to give them instructions.  They see the paper....and GO!

Word Families - Game PPTs
« Reply #59 on: March 09, 2011, 02:17:15 pm »
I would like to share these with anyone also battling to teach Phonics.

Suggestion:
1. Use slide 1 to teach the "sound" of the family stem (bat, cat) where you start with the "a". Correct when students use the Korean "ah" sound. Then use the other sounds to show how sounds make words (m+a+n), but work towards (m+an) by shortening the "a" and "n" sounds.

2. Click on "Fire" and first word appears - have students say the the word and then sound the word phonetically. Hint make teams and give points. Repeat as many times as necessary.

3. Click on "NEXT" to move to next game.

4. Make teams (number of players per team depends on your class size).

5. "Click here" will release a word that drops behind the computer monitor.

6. First to answer (say and sound) is the winner and gets points, money etc.

7. If word drops too quickly, click on "Peep" to reveal word as in a camera flash. Continue to hit "Peep" until someone scores.

Here are the first 10 Word Families. I have another set of 10 Word Families ready to upload if required.

Happy Teaching
