Beginning Letter Sounds Worksheet
« Reply #140 on: April 18, 2011, 09:43:31 am »
I made up this worksheet/test for my grade 3 class but it could be used from K-5 depending on the level of your students.  Hope someone finds this helpful!

This is a pretty basic lesson plan aimed at 1st graders.  You can follow the general gist of it, incorporating your own resources, songs, worksheets, add games or whatever.
Here's a basic couple of worksheets to go along with.

Wow thanks, just watched A.  This will be great for after school 1st and 2nd graders...

The music, combined with the speed of the animations, the repetition, and then the goofy voices on top of all of that is kind of trip. But, I am sure young students will enjoy it.

Here are some more options...

These are awesome and my kids love them!  They're super catchy and not as childish as many other alphabet songs you find.

I find teaching phonics a little challenging. Especially to get the students attention. I tend to use starfall.com as my main source of materials. But sometimes the students get so bored. Its cool to see how others teach phonics.. totally will use all these materials in my classes!! :D

Phonics Alphabet Flash Presentation
« Reply #147 on: April 20, 2011, 09:11:55 am »
Hey guys, I made this flash presentation over the past couple of days. It's very flash-heavy, so if your internet is too slow, or  your computer sucks, it might not work so great.

Here it is: http://www.wix.com/nonchalantninja/phonics-a-z

But I tried to make it as entertaining and colorful as possible. Please let me know if you think there could be any changes made, and also let me know if there are flash presentations you could use, because I plan on making a bunch of them.

Hi

Great job with the Phonics.

I would just suggest that the words NOT be in all capital letters - I have noticed that my young kids who do not yet Proper names etc make mistakes when writing.

Look forward to your next contribution.

Yeah, I'll probably change them into lower-case letters. My problem is that when I write, my handwriting is all caps- comic book style, so I tend to do everything in caps.

I think I might also change the font into something a little more readable.

Very spiffy indeed. An argument could be made for trying to avoid initial consonant blends and that long i_e vowel in icecream (lest you ever decide to take this further and tackle the rest of the phonemes) but otherwise this is great! I'm really liking that you chose to visually distinguish between aspirated and non-aspirated consonants as this is something the Korean students really do pick up on.

As for the font issue, I might have something that could assist.

I recommend changing the font to something with a regular handwritten not a typeface a, and reconsider explaining angry as a long/magic-e (a_e) vowel as I suspect you'll find it to be a short vowel sound. I find your approach to teaching all the a variants at once (a, a_e, ar) interesting however, and I'd love to hear how it goes, whether they got overwhelmed or manage it and retain it. It's an approach I honestly never considered.

I personally have found "a" the most challenging letter to teach as the students have been indoctrinated by their homeroom teacher that a is ㅏ in English. The fact that it's seemingly easier to learn "z", an alien sound, than unlearn and relearn "a" is bizarre. That muddling of romanised Korean and English then sticks with them for years to come. Sometimes to adulthood as I've met Korean coteachers who mispronounce their short vowels as romanised Korean vowels (not British accented end-of-consonant "a"s either).

Another question out of curiosity. Are you planning on going a-z, or a,e,i,o,u,b-z? I've been tossing up which I think would be more useful for a bit now and would love to hear other opinions (especially from anyone experienced in the field).

Materials for teaching the whole alphabet / initial phonic sounds a-z.

I have attached a phonics practise PPT using the vocabulary in the song below. I also made a phonics Sonic the Hedgehog bomb game based on the song.

Here's a game I use for my 1st and 2nd graders to work on phonic. (Thanks to the original creator of this game). I added more to the game so that there were slides with questions instead of just the race track. Modify as needed.

I made these for my first and second grade afterschool classes. We use a phonics book, but I believe you could use these PPTs without it no problem.
Please use and enjoy

Hi everyone,

The once-a-week Korean-English substitute teacher gave me a gem today:

http://www.writingwizard.longcountdown.com/multi-word_handwriting_worksheet_maker.html

It lets you generate those tracable writing worksheets teachers use with phonics/learning letters. It's a free online wizard available with some options - including single word/letter generator, or multi ones. Pretty customizable, and you can print the image right away.
