FBI results/apostille question
« on: April 26, 2013, 02:54:39 am »

I hope someone can help me with this.

I have my FBI background check results, but now I have to get it apostilled.  My secretary of State does not do this.  I'm confused as to where I have to send them.
Is is to the CJIS in WV?
Do I simply send the results with a request and money order to be apostilled? or should I have submitted the prints with the request ( mine were done electronically and my local sheriff's office told me there was no way to do this).
Has anyone else submitted their results to be apostilled?
I would appreciate any insight on this, as I want to get it done ASAP.
Thanks.

What state are you in? I'm pretty sure the Secretary of State is supposed to be the one doing it.

Most State - Secretary of States will not apostille a Federal document.  You have to send it to the State Department on the Federal level since it's a Federal document.  The apostille from them can take a REALLY long time if you just send it to them.  I recommend using a courier service.  It's much more expensive but you can usually get your docs back within 1-2 weeks (or wait 2-3 months like I did the first time and lost out on a placement for not having the documents in time).

State Department website: http://www.state.gov/m/a/auth/c16920.htm

I used this company for my CBC apostille, but there are others: http://www.authxperts.com/

last i checked, electronic submissions were not eligibile for federal apostilles.
It said this clearly on the fbi website.
Also, its the secretary of state in Washington D.C. that you need the apostille from...not your state's Secretary of State.

Now there is an alternate method of getting an apostille at the state level that may or may not be accepted.  You can sign a letter saying that your results are real and then notarize the letter and have the notarized letter apostilled by your state.   You are basically relying on the person taking your papers to be lazy and clueless though.

As everyone mentioned before. It's not a state thing. It's a federal via U.S. Department of State. This website helped me when I applied: http://marshalljonesjr.com/apostilled-fbi-background-check-for-teaching-esl-in-korea/

FedEx your FBI background check with a prepaid return envelope to the State Department. All the information you will need is on the state department website. A FEDERAL DOCUMENT CANNOT BE APOSTILLED BY AN AGENCY FROM THE STATE LEVEL.

its moot because the OP states that he used an electronic channeler.   His only chance is to cheese it with a notarized affadavit and a state level apostille.

Quote
Note: An FBI-approved Channeler cannot authenticate (apostille) fingerprint search results. A request for your FBI Identification Record or proof that a record does not exist must be submitted directly to the FBI if an authentication (apostille) is needed.

Thanks, everyone.  I decided to have them redone with ink and will submit that, as well as using a courier to get them back faster.  I'm hoping for the best.
