Have you noticed Koreans preoccupation with appearances?
« on: February 17, 2011, 03:16:40 pm »
What should you say when a korean person compliments you? I've heard that if you say "Thanks" it seems like "I know I am" or sort of arrogant...

Should you just deny it?? NO, No! I'm not ~ And be try to appear everso humble?

How about replying with: "You are kind to say so."  That way you can end the conversation with no loss of face for anyone.  Just a suggestion, I know there will be better ones.  Good luck:)

I always heard you should compliment them back.. on anything.  So bmsteacher's suggestion (You are kind to say so) should be perfect

I usually say something like "Oh, no" while looking down, like I'm embarrassed. (It seems to be how it's done?) Or I just say "You're too kind."

I'm male, I do the "oh no no no", look down with a fake smile, shake the head slightly. I have to say I have perfected the expression. Anything else just took too much energy.

I've heard thats it's considered arrogant in Korean culture to agree with someone when they are complimenting you. You should deny and put you head down. It makes you look modest and humble :)

doesnt it feel like the most awkward come on?

i usually just say 'i know'  when they say i'm handsome

maybe i'll smile and touch my face at the same time

usually, they end up laughing

its the only way i can get back at them for boring me to death with their canned chatter

Just say thanks and recognize that it is something they love to say for whatever reason.  It's an empty compliment usually no matter if you are pretty or not.

I don't think it's an empty compliament.  Koreans are not ones to lie about looks.  They just rate baeuty differently then Westerners.

I have to say Bern's response was pretty darn funny.  Why not just punch them in the stomach and add "You better believe I'm handsome and don't you forget it!  Spread the word."  I've also gotten "you're handsome" and it's amazing to me how often males will compliment other males.  Also, why is having a small head or small face such a good thing?  I always hear "small face, good".  Sometimes I've had teachers with big melons stand behind me when taking pictures, just to make sure their head looks smaller or equal to mine.

Usually it does just embarrass me when people compliment me on my appearance especially when I have teachers staring at my eyelashes for 20 minutes. But what I don't like is going to the grocery store and having Koreans workers (practically EVERY time I go in) say "Hi! Hi! Hi! Beautiful!" and ask me my name. At first I was polite but now its just annoying. I don't like being the center of attention all the time and I never quite no how to respond. This has definitely been a culture difference I haven't quite gotten used to yet. Its interesting how often the teachers even comment to each other about someone's outfit or hairstyle or some other appearance related thing.

Compliment their clothes, boots or mo-tor-cy-cle hairstyle. Friendly and a nice cultural lesson too. Western culture 101: appearance-related compliments are strictly limited to things purchased with money.
