I don't know if any of you saw this or not.
Supposedly the decision to cut all NETs from Gyeonggi middle and high schools
was made last Friday.

What do you guys think?

EDIT: Title edited for clarity as this is only for high school and middle school.

Wow! This doesn't surprise me at all. I hate how they tell people at the last minute!!  Thanks for sharing this information.

Not surprised, but very relieved that it didn't say Elementary schools and that my school likes me enough to renew.

Are those letters typically just Word docs without any official letterhead or logo?

China would probably be a good deal for people being let go that like teaching older students. A lot of Chinese universities are fine with a small amount of experience and/or a related degree.

I'm no expert but this smells fishy.  Sure the possibility that GEPIK will cut all middle and high schools is quite high given the current situations but to do so in an unlabeled, anonymous, basically blank word document....I'm guessing a troll (or some stupidly incompetent workers....actually with GEPIK that is a real possibility).

My friend said the same letter was delivered to her co-teacher at her school today.  Here's the pic she uploaded, though again there's no letterhead or anything official *looking.*  She also received the same letter in an email.

I had no intention of re-signing with my school anyway...

When I received some type of correspondence about a change in policy regarding severance disbursements it came directly from the GEPIK coordinator in my email.  It was EXACTLY like the letter shown in this thread.  No letterhead or anything.  It was just a regular letter.

That said, maybe some schools are getting a bit of latitude to make decisions about their foreign teacher situation?  Another foreigner who lives in my building was quite ebullient when I ran into him Friday as he said his school had that day asked him if he wanted to stay for another year.  Maybe they'll be going to bat for him.  Perhaps some of you might find yourselves similarly situated if you haven't received a letter.

I just want to know why they didn't email everybody who is affected by this?  They've done so in the past over severance issues but not for a giant, you definitely need to look for a new job next year, announcement?

Yes, they are.

I guess we have to see what happens. Some schools could use their budgets to keep you. They're discussing this situation with the principal.

My coteacher had a meeting where she was informed that they would have enough budget for me for next year.  I work at a middle school that is funded by GEPIK.

Make sure you check if your school is funded by the local district. Most of the schools in my area are.

Scratch my previous post.  I just learned (from the InterWeb) that the aforementioned individual is also getting The Ax.  He's taking it like a champ though! I still haven't received the letter yet, but they're ridiculously slow about apprising me of important things.

My head teachers have heard nothing yet. There's a school meeting happening so I'm hoping they ask about it, but I've been told "not to worry" (Which does not help at all.)

Sorry to hear the bad news for people! Unfortunately, Korea is not immune to economic problems. Hopefully, some day, the economies of the world improve. It would mean less EFL teachers and a potentially restored or increased budget. An all around win.
