Busan EPIK jobs cut?
« on: November 29, 2012, 10:18:50 am »
Hi - does anyone else know about whether jobs are being cut by the Busan Metro Office of Education? My coteacher mentioned that BMOE was cutting middle and high school jobs. Has anyone else heard about this?

All High School jobs apart from the international school are being cut. My co-teacher showed me a list with everyone who is being renewed so they will have a place somewhere but not at a High School.

Cutting jobs or no longer funding future contracts and positions? I really get confused on what people mean by "jobs cut" on this forum.

Most people associate job cuts with less jobs.  So regardless of how it happens (which would be a different forum), if there are 100 jobs and 5 are lost (due to less funding), that is 5 jobs cut.  Now the people will be moved but that is still less space for future EPIKers.

To stay on topic, I have HEARD this to.  To have any concrete evidence is another story.

Not sure how many others out there started their contracts in April, but my coteacher just told me that they will no longer do April starts. If I want to resign my contract, I have four months off and then will have to reapply all over again to get an August-start contract.

It has started in Seoul and now they are going to do the same to Busan. Brutal.

The co-teacher seems to have found out about this this week here, so it seems like it's new info. to all. This is my imperfect impression of the situation, tho.

According to someone who met with somebody else on the BUSAN EPIK facebook page:

"OK I just got done with my meeting. I saw all of the documents and know exactly what's happening with the program in Busan next year. All jobs are getting cut to some extent. All of the general high school positions will be cut. There will be 6 jobs kept for special academic high schools. Elementary and middle school jobs will be cut by about twenty positions. EPIK is not hiring any new teachers next year. Instead, seventy percent of us will get to keep our jobs. They are starting evaluations for all positions in June, and rehires will be based off school recommendations. Hopefully some people will be leaving after one year and that seventy percent number will increase. Much love guys. Good luck."

I hope he doesn't mind me reposting this here. He seems like a nice guy who is big on sharing info, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I've seen the rehires list and saw some people who did not get renewed, so this seems about right. I don't think this is too bad, considering the huge amount of teachers, but it definitely points to things changing. Oh, well!

Hey guys, I am a new teacher for the 2013 school year and I have been recommended to Busan MOE through EPIK. But if EPIK is not hiring any new teachers, as previous poster suggests, how is this possible?

There are more FT's leaving than the job cuts.
