It seems all of the replies on this thread are concerning Middle School.  What about Elementary? Who can suggest something (other than Simpsons and Adventure Time) for Elementary Grade 5 and 6?

I'm considering Doctor Who, but not sure which episode would be the best for this age......

Doctor Who might be a hard sell at that age. If you're determined though maybe try Partners in Crime. That episode is pretty light and I'm sure they'll find the Adipose cute at least.

Other shows that might go over well are Avatar: The Last Airbender or The Legend of Korra. Both are cartoons, but with themes and humor that are good for all ages, including adults! Or if you don't want to go the cartoon route at all, you can always try one of those teen sitcoms if you can find subs: Wizards of Waverly Place, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Victorious, etc.

I have been showing my students episodes of Victorious but it seems the subtitled episodes have ran out on mgoon.  They stop around s02e04.  Do you have recommendations for similar shows?  I don't like showing sitcoms such as Big Bang Theory and Community because I think they are a little too racy.

I'm at a boys' middle school. Today I found out we're having a relaxing 'do half a class, then watch a video' week. I decided to show an episode of Parks and Recreation, 4x04 "Pawnee Rangers"

Around Halloween, I usually show my 5th graders Dr. Who series 3 10th episode. Blink. It's not too scary and there's no blood. Just a creepy-looking statue trying to get the MC. Even if it did the character wouldn't die just get sent to the past. For an after-school English club, I've tried Carmen Sandiego. The new version. After they got used to the storyline I used the interactive game of Carmen Sandiego. Where they get to make their own choices.

i keep refreshing this thread hoping there are more comments cause i am wondering the same thing. i've been watching movies with my high school students (boys and girls), but we can't always finish them and i feel bad. series would be so much better, but it's so tricky finding an appropriate series and the subtitles to go with it.

I like using the Bear Grylls series for 'movie' days. It's nice because it's interactive and the students can choose their own adventure. The episodes fit nicely into a class period too

Tv shows...

The Price is Right and Phil Donahue i stayed home for (2 of 6 channels internationally available more than a decade before the Internet.

A wrong number phone call by a coincidental female turned into a 3-hour conversation (can you imagine talking so long so much these days) and i never met her, i think. This was when what you said and what you did, did NOT define you.

Hahahaha thanks for drawing my attention to this one Kurt. Now, this is the kind of drunken Van post I like. Completely nonsensical without offending anyone.

Again... tv shows?

Stop it! ... And teach.

There is not a tv show ever worth more than 10 minutes of students time in an English-learning classroom, and even then, it takes prep (listening for a purpose) and a point to it all (questions to be answered, comments to be made, discussion to be had).

Ideally, you throw away media (any medium between you and them) and interact directly.

It's hard to respect a teacher who turns on a tv show and sits back for 20+ minutes.
