That should be public information, anyway, since it is about public funding.

Do you mean such information should be provided to the public or such information should be provided to the public in English? It really seems like you mean the latter. I'm pretty sure such information is public record and could be access if one knew the proper channels through which to access the information.

What's wrong with informing foreign teachers about which parts of Gyeonggi Province fund their own programs and which areas rely on the province for full funding? That should be public information, anyway, since it is about public funding.

I think that the reason would be that it's slightly misleading. Just because some schools within a city are funded doesn't mean that they all will be. My school is City Hall funded...the one two minutes away had their funding revoked.

I guess you are asking the wrong people too. Maybe there is a list!

Well if potential teachers knew which cities funded their English programs, it would be less of a crap shoot figuring out which schools relied entirely on GEPIK and which didnt.

I'm sure your coordinator would know this info.

Yeah...like I said...maybe there is a list.  I don't care if there's a list or not.  It's kind of irrelevant isn't it?  There's either a job available when you apply...or there isn't.  Knowing which cities have some City Hall funding (the answer of course, is that every single City Hall in Gyeonggi-Do offers some level of funding for their English and other programs...just some more than others) and which schools are exclusively GPOE funded doesn't add anything to the old job hunting arsenal.

As for my co-ordinator...I'm sure that they have better things to do than have me call them from my Suwon City Hall funded school and ask them to provide me with lists that aren't relevant to me or my situation.

A list of which schools are locally funded would be very helpful, especially right now, as job security matters with the funding issues looming over all of us.

My city doesnt provide a lot of funding to schools (3 in my area are losing teachers).  My coordinator told me this today.  So if I were looking for a job (as in directly, without a recruiter) I would probably not look in my city.  I would instead focus on cities where they do provide funding and contact someone there as I would be more likely to get hired.  Also if I were planning to stay a year or two, your job would probably be a little more secure (at least as secure as ESL jobs can be).

As for my co-ordinator...I'm sure that they have better things to do than have me call them from my Suwon City Hall funded school and ask them to provide me with lists that aren't relevant to me or my situation.

That's lovely but this information isnt about you, it's about people who are looking work.

It's public information so there is a list somewhere. The government, province, principals, Korean teachers, and recruiters all know it. Why not make this information available to foreign teachers?

Why not make this information available to foreign teachers?

The information exists. I doubt a list exists. The information is probably spread across multiple government databases (e.g., province, POE, cities, schools, etc.). Because such information is not essential to hiring foreign teachers, if you want a complete list you'll need to do the legwork.

I had an interesting chat with my co-teacher today. She told me that next year the University entrance exams will be changing to incorporate a speaking part and this will have an effect on English in Middle and High Schools. She believes that schools will need to hire more Native English teachers at these levels. Elementary positions may be cut as part of this process as these teachers can be replaced with Koreans easily enough at this level, but in turn these native English teachers should be diverted to the High Schools instead so the students don't lose the speaking confidence they gained at Middle School level

I have a funny feeling the GPC will end up with egg on their face once the tests do change, Would be a deliciously amusing twist of fate.

O.K.

Firstly...someone requested a list of which City Halls provided funding.  Your City Hall would show as providing funding wouldn't it?  I'm sure it would...because it provides 'some funding'...even though you say it isn't a lot.

My City Hall finds my school...and some other schools.  How many schools would a City Hall need to fund to make this list?  All that I was saying...was that all City Halls fund some GEPIK teachers...so a list would be fruitless.  Nothing you said contradicted that.

That's also lovely, but what I wrote wasn't directed to you, it was directed to lacyfan who suggested that I should contact MY coordinator to ask about a list.  Also...just about what you said...how on Earth could a person who is looking for work contact their co-ordinator?  Surely, one must already have a job with GEPIK if they were to have a GEPIK co-ordinator?  That's just common sense.

This GEPIK thread has gone on too loooong. Facts are this. Is GEPIK finished? No. Is it being scaled back? Probably, just as the other English programmes in Korea are likely to be. Why? Probably to do with budgetary matters. Does it suck? Yes. Will you be out of a job? Who knows? If so move on.

There's much more to this GEPIK situation than just "Yes, no, maybe."

Burndog, I NEVER posted anything about you.

I posted that GEPIK should inform GEPIK teachers about which areas/schools have local funding for their foreign teachers so that teachers, and applicants, can know which schools are not affected by the current hiring freeze. That is a perfectly reasonable request.

OK. But, remember, teachers need information about local school funding because it matters when looking for jobs, and job security with GEPIK.

Okay, I'll provide another suggestion since my previous one was ignored. When you, or any other teacher, apply for a teaching position at a Gyeonggi public school ask the simple question, "How is the position funded?"

I realize you want GEPIK to provide a list, but they're not going to do it. It doesn't matter why. It's not going to happen, and so teachers need to find alternative means for finding the information. (I consider that a part of due diligence.)

Unless you speak fluent Korean, good luck asking "who funds my position." ㅋㅋㅋ

It does matter why information is withheld from foreign teachers by an organization, GEPIK, that is supposed to be helping us.

Lacyfan,

You're labouring under a 'misaprehension' -
GEPIK is not here to help you. They're here to put native English-speaking bums in Gyeonggi-do PS 'seats'. You're a foreigner and they could not 'care less' about you (unless it affects them).

Sincerely,
CM

Sorry, but I understand what is happening. I'm the one challenging GEPIK to do something to help the foreign teachers in their system. There's at least one other poster on this thread, and site, who is a "true believer" in the GEPIK leadership. Tell him about GEPIK.
