Recruiters are still advertising "reliable" public school positions in Gyeonggi-do.  ::)
The Ks once gave me five minutes notice. I didn't know what to do with the extra time.

They are reliable, in the sense you you can reliably be told "whoopsie, we've looked at our finances and decided that we can't afford you, but we will still have that awesome staff trip every few months."

There are still schools that are not funded by the GPOE...which means that there are still schools that are hiring new teachers...I don't know about other cities...but Suwon (for example) is almost totally City Hall funded these days.  So I guess it's a matter of asking the recruiter to find out if the job is properly funded or not...which leads to the problem where most recruiters are either dishonest or lazy...which makes getting a straight answer a bit of a chore.

Is there a list of which areas are funded locally?

If I recall correctly, Gunpo and Uiwang are also funded locally.

Not that I am aware of...but it's worth noting that even within cities with City Hall funding...there are schools that aren't funded at all.

That's right. My school in Suwon is City Hall funded and found out last minute I cannot renew because the money is NOT there.

So there's accurate way of knowing how your school is funded and if they are telling the truth about the "financial" reasons for eliminating the foreign teacher?

Well...you can ask your co-teacher.  There's no reason why your co-teacher would lie about the manner in which your position is funded.

The second part of your question is a bit odd though.  I mean...do you think that the Korea Times is involved in an elaborate hoax with the GPC and GPOE whereby they are deliberately mis-leading the public on matters of public interest?  That seems a little far fetched!  There is no reason for the Korea Times to mislead people about why teaching positions may be cut...and the budget refusal by the GPC is on the record...it's not a rumor or hearsay.  They GPOE and GPC don't need to lie to us...and they certainly would;t lie to us via a national newspaper!

Will the budget cuts affect schools in the countryside?

That's impossible to answer for a number of reasons.  The first reason is that GEPIK and EPIK (and a lot of other programs) ALL have schools in the countryside...so without knowing who you're with...it's difficult to know if it's going to be a problem.  The other reasons have to do with not knowing your City, or how that City is funded, or how your school is funded, and a few other things.

Rather than asking us about generic country schools...you should wait and talk to your co-teacher about it when you can.  They can give you specific advice about your school.  It's more reliable than asking us.

I think the real question is: "What would you do if you actually did know?".

The budget cuts will affect country schools if they're funded by GEPIK.

It depends on what city you live in.  Gimpo city has urban schools and country schools.  Since Gimpo schools get their money from the city, they're probably in better shape.

Even if your school doesnt get money from GEPIK your school can still fund your position from their own money.  My school did this with the teacher who was here before I arrived.  She was Filipino and was actually a really good teacher - she just wanted to leave to raise a family.

I was dissmissed From Coming to anymore Gepik Confrences, After the last one in March At the Middle High School I aired Out Dane Bae, FOr lying to people about the Gepik Cutbacks, Alot of people saw this coming a mile away. The Thing was they wanted to keep it from teachers in order for Us, Not to just pack up and leave, But a problem comes when many of you that signed a re contract, had to be cut because of the school not knowing if they where going to get, allocations. If any of you find yourself in a bind as such and still want to hang around Korea for another year, dont hesistate to contact me im4romnewyork@yahoo.com and we will try to work something out. I think the real question is: "What would you do if you actually did know?".

Many teachers would know where to apply and how stable their job situation is if everyone knew how the different schools are funded.

What's wrong with informing foreign teachers about which parts of Gyeonggi Province fund their own programs and which areas rely on the province for full funding? That should be public information, anyway, since it is about public funding.

I know that Gimpo and Hwaseong are two cities that fund their English programs.

I think that the reason would be that it's slightly misleading. Just because some schools within a city are funded doesn't mean that they all will be. My school is City Hall funded...the one two minutes away had their funding revoked.

I guess you are asking the wrong people too. Maybe there is a list!
