Hardly any insect life. Figured out why!
« on: August 30, 2012, 11:33:49 am »
I've always been intrigued by the lack of bug life in my little town. No mosquitoes, no grasshoppers, no spiders, no lizards...

I noticed that every week a truck drives around the whole town billowing out parafin (kerosene) smelling smoke! I'm guessing it's for the mosquitoes.

Surely repeated exposure to this can't be good for people! Or, am I just paranoid?

i read that its supposed to be something that doesn't damage the environment (I mean, they do spray it around the crops) but still.... when comes by, I shut my windows!  Also, one time I ran into my pharmacy and insisted that they shut the doors. They couldn't understand me of course, so they didn't know why and didn't do it, but two seconds later, he understood why and they all shut the doors as fast as they could :)

When they used to spray it in Busan, I was told to shut all the windows in the school and to not let the children play in it. I was told it was a nerve gas that has a short life. I was told it generally isn't dangerous, but it is better to be safe.

I've never heard of kerosene poisoning so I looked it up. What I'm seeing is that it is possible, especially with children for hypocarbon paraffin to poison you.

But I'm not sure how much or what the delivery system is. I can finally explain that smell in the air (besides the sewage).

In the small farming town I lived in before, they used to have those trucks. This is what happened -

My coteacher said she used to chase it as a child but she wasn't sure why  :/
