Interracial Couples Commercial
« on: August 27, 2012, 10:57:06 am »
So... I was leaving the TV on for background noise until I saw an advertisement with a Korean and then a few mixed couples (korean/white foreigner).  To my surprise, (with my rudimentary understanding of Korean), it was about tolerance and accepting others of mixed marriages.

Two things were pretty interesting...
1) It was aired around primetime (during the soap operas at around 9pm) and the narration was given solely from a Korean guy with mixed couples in the background.

2) It only featured mixed couples between Koreans and white foreigners.  Not a single view of southeast asians (who would comprise much more of the mixed marriage percentage), blacks, or any other minority.

All in all, it's a pretty good start.. considering how global Korea has become (not just with the influx of foreigners, but the influence korea is having).

The title reminded me of this Samsung commercial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0tZ6n3yRow&feature=player_embedded

It makes fun of a Canadian guy struggling with Korean. He can't think of the Korean phrase to tell his smart TV to change the channel after his Korean girlfriend finds out he's been watching porn.

Good and Bad:
it's good that they are making an effort to tolerate interracial couples.
The bad-since it was on the same time as the Korean dramas, no one, I mean ZERO people watched it. :'(

;D  Welcome to Korea, yes, you would think that they would be used to us by now, I mean there have only been foreigners in Korea since 1950.  One would think 62 years would be a reasonable time to adapt to us foreigners but anyhooo.

My wife (she is a Filipina and gets more stares cause she is out and about with me, a blond, blue-eyed foreigner) has developed a counter for the stares, when she sees them giving her/us the good old up and down, she glares at them gives them the good old up and down too and then glares into their eyes.

That absolutely does it, they cannot maintain eye contact and then look away, end of problem. Try it.   ;D ;D

I hope the commercial described by the OP was a little more flattering than that terrible Samsung offering.

The only thing the Samsung commercial is missing is for the foreigner to have HIV and then it would be a slam dunk.

Yes, that Samsung advert is pretty low. Ah well been here long enough to expect it.

Another Samsung ad involving an interracial couple:

She discovers her western boyfriend is cheating on her.

not exactly high-profile, but one of my favorite korean celebs, kim soohyun, recently did a series of advertisements for the (Korean?) brand J.estina with British actress Kaya Scodelario. He even requested that she be the female model. I thought it turned out really nice. I only wish I saw it places in real life, like subway stations, instead of just on the internet.

In all fairness, the other Samsung SmartTV commercials make fun of koreans too. One had a lazy bum who wouldn't leave his couch long enough to get the remote, and the other one had a korean woman who wore so much damn makeup the TV didn't recognize her she took it off.

I personally think the idea for the commercial was pretty good actually. Who else would have a problem using the voice commands than a foreigner? What else could be on the TV that would be shocking to his girlfriend other than porn? At least his girlfriend was hot...

Then again, in the phone commercial, it wasn't necessary for the lothario to be a foreigner so I don't have any defense of that one.

We get that one sometimes too.  But my favorites are the people that can hear us speaking English somewhere behind them when we walk down the sidewalk.  They not so subtly slow down, so they can walk behind us and watch us.

I haven't seen this one.  I like how she's not half naked and lying under his feet (like I've seen in other interracial ads.) This one's pretty classy.  :)

Lol, actually, my fiance and I both do it.  He mean-mugs the men and I take on the women, lol.  I try to ignore most people, but when they do 180+ turn or try to look invisible through their car window I feel like I have to do something.

There is a tv show here about interracial couples. I've watched it a few times, and it seems to focus on families with one parent from somewhere in Southeast Asia. It's actually quite a nice show to watch, even if I can't understand all of the Korean. You can still get the gist of what they're talking about. Don't know what it's called though. I've just happened to catch it a few times when eating out.

EDIT:
I just asked my co-teachers and the kids cleaning the room about the show and they all quickly answered! It's called "Love in Asia". If you do a youtube search for it, a few episodes come up.
