Last Class- Olympic Day!
« on: July 12, 2012, 03:20:38 pm »
So for my last class of the summer for my elementary school my co teacher wants us to basically play games the whole period. I wanted to have a theme for this so I picked the upcoming Olympics. We are going to watch a short clip on the Olympics then I will explain briefly what the Olympics are.

I was going to have time for about 3 games, and already had one (basketball) all planned out. I was wondering if anyone out there had any good game ideas that have something to do with some kind of sport? Something active, not like a worksheet or anything like that.... Something to get them up and moving and have FUN!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I just did this for my last 5th grade class this week. I don't have my ppt on me at the moment but the games I did were:
  • Javelin Throw: Using McDonald's straws throw the "javelin" as far as you can. Farthest throw wins.
  • Arm Wrestling: Split boys and girls up and have two winners.
  • Gymnastics: Mark a line with tape on the ground and have them do splits; the longest wins

You can do gold, silver, bronze winners too if you want. I tried to pick a sport aimed at the boys (arm wrestling) and one for the girls (gymnastics) but in the end everyone loved all three. I did a quick intro of summer Olympic sports beforehand. It had pics of Korean athletes competing in London this year with their respective sports. I made it into a hidden picture game with the entire pic obscured except for their face and asked the students to guess what sport they played. I'll upload it tomorrow morning as my usb is in my desk at the moment.

EDIT: added PPT. Fairly simple intro for the Olympics. Change the 'Jumunjin Olympics' part to your own city/school.

I'll be having a olympic day as part of my summer camp planning . I'm also just going to introduce them to the olympics basic things and then introduce them to some of the Athletes around the world with a few extra korean ones . the 3 events i will be having is Double dutch , relay with 2 girls and rtwo boys participating in every race and Hit the target . they basically have to try and hi the target with a beach ball the team thjat does or get the closest wins the round.

I have borrowed some of your work and turned into an intro ppt and an interactive bomb game lesson based on the olympics.

Here's a PPT with some different events - including the ones you suggest, seanthon.  Worked pretty well.
