Hagwon working schedules - opinions please!

Hi guys,

I just wanted to get some opinions as to my current hagwon as I feel like they're taking advantage of the staff.

We have to write reports every month. During our day, we literally don't get any free time - we get 5 minute break between lessons and an hour for lunch, but we have to help the kids with their lunch so we maybe get 20/25 minutes on a good day.

I have 27 students in total so if each report takes, say, 10 minutes, that's adding an extra 4 hours 30 minutes per month to my schedule. We were given a free lesson per week in which to write reports but that has, as of this week, been taken away. I just wanted to gauge other peoples' opinion - do you think I could say something and how would you approach the subject?

I've never worked at a hagwan, so my opinion may not count for much, but from what I've heard that kind of schedule is relatively common, though exploitive. Many people I've talked to simply burn out from environments like that. I've heard that many of the big hagwan chains are like that. They squeeze every last bit of work and life out of you thinking to simply replace you with fresher meat once you burn out or lose your flavor.

The time to ask these kind of questions was BEFORE you agreed to do this work. Now that you have been doing it then it is going to be harder to make your argument. If something was off then you should have looked over your contract and stood your ground. Look over your contract and see what the language is regarding these things. If you just started there and you are doing what you consider extra work then it most likely isn't going to stop there. I worked at a Hagwon before and I had to learn the hard way. Stand your ground and ask yourself do you really care about keeping a job if they don't abide by what both of you agreed to.
