Putting wife on health insurance
« on: April 02, 2012, 11:03:28 am »
Hi,

I have searched and found some information with a link to a printable document but it wouldn't open for some reason.

My wife is here on a spousal E-2 visa. She has been here more than 3 months, which I believe is necessary to opt into the health plan. But, how do I go about it?

I read something about a "gu" office but I'm not sure what that is and if this rural burg would have one.

Any help would be welcome. Thanks.

My contract states that my wife will join my scheme and my school will pay for it. If your contract is the same, then ask your co-teacher to do it for you. I just had to produce my marriage certificate and they did the rest. We did it immediately and didn't wait 3 months.  My co-teacher and I paid a visit to the local Gu Office and got a document from the stating she was here with me and registered as my spouse. Your wife will have a F3 visa, that is the visa for a spouse of an E2 visa holder.

Not sure if my school pays all of her insurance or just half like they do for me, but anyway it is about 80,000 won a month which is deducted from my salary.

I am with SMOE, but I think all of the contracts are the same.

If she is on an E-2 Visa, then her employer should be giving her insurance.  If she is an F-3, then your employer can just add her to yours.  Takes about a month to get it done.

Thanks folks. I'll take a look at her visa (I thought it was an E-2) and then talk to my admin guy.
