Do you count down the days / weeks?
« on: March 28, 2012, 08:02:54 am »
I was reading an American-based teachers' forum and was surprised how many were mentioning exactly how many days they had left until the end of the school year - and not just calendar days but exact working days. I thought, wow jobs must suck when you're doing that. I've never done that at my job. At my last I did but I had handed in a resignation letter and was counting from 30. How about you?

I was counting down from 30 in the last month of my last job, but the 3 years and 11 months before that I don't think I counted down a single minute.

50% of my work days were taken up by what I probably would have been doing at home anyway. The time before vacation (camp) was usually the most professionally rewarding time of the year. Even desk warming was OK. But, the second I formally told the principal I wouldn't be re-signing, that is when the clock started ticking.

Yep.  I hate that I'm doing it.  I know I should appreciate my job etc etc....but I'm honestly so flippin bored and tired of my job that I'm counting down til my contract ends.
I'll probably go home, be unemployed for a few months and end up back here....haha....but right now, I could use the break.

btw....271 days til Christmas.  :)

I sort of do, but not in any way that damages my mental health or spirit or anything like that.

I never really counted down the days for anything, but as others have said, as soon as I realized that I wouldn't be at this school anymore, a mental clock started in my head. I've got exactly 5 months left now, so counting down the days isn't going to do me any good, but I am sort of counting down the months.

I love what I'm doing, and one of the best part about it is that the days/weeks FLY by. There's nothing worse than being at a job where time slows down to a crawl. Every day I come to work and before I know it I'm leaving (and I'm usually here from 7:30 to 5:00 - I come early and stay late to get more studying time in). There's just so much to do in a day to even really think about a countdown for me.

Yes.

I know I shouldn't but I can't wait to leave this job!!! I don't enjoy it. It's pure work.

I go in every day with my game face on giving the illusion I am happy and relaxed and enthusiastic. It mostly works.

I'm 3/4 of the way through this contract and just trying to kick things over the finish line so I can have a big holiday and finally feel genuinely happy, relaxed, and excited.

I once marked the completed days on my calendar with a big red cross. I did that just so I could see exactly what day it was very quickly.
It freaked my co teacher out as he thought it meant I was unhappy and was planning not to renew. This was about 1 month into a 12 month contract. If I really hated something and began counting down the days then there is no way I could get through 11 months, counting down from that far out would make it worse!.

That said I am sure there are people who do it sometimes but arenít focusing on it all the time, just a temporary escape to get over a short term hump. I do remember one unruly class (3rd grade High school at a vocational school) where I was able to show incredible patience comforted by the fact I only had another couple of hours with them to go.

I'm counting down the days until my contract ends and I embark on a round the world trip for months / years. I enjoy working here and put in a tonne of effort for the kids but really all I'm waiting for is to get on that flight and be free from employment and responsibility. Sweet bliss.

I knew a girl who started counting the days at orientation already...   at one stage she put 260 (or something) post-its on her door in her apartment and pulled one off every morning.  Do us a favor and midnight run next time, k?

I have the opposite problem. I find time here in Korea to be moving freakishly fast. Months keep disappearing, and then years.

I also have a running count of how many weeks I have left.  It helps me plan both my extra classes to make sure we are schedule and my weekends so that I can plan for all the things I have on my Korea Bucket List!

unfortunately, :) I live a bit too much in Kairos to even remember today's date, let alone count down to the end. I am content with the day itself and let tomorrow be concerned about tomorrow.

I never did as a teacher but I am currently in the Middle East and have a countdown to vacation (2 weeks, 1 day, 2 hours) and for my expected departure date (78.285714 weeks).

On a positive note, I also count up the money that I am making!

Nice to have a positive opinion to counting down the days.

I am counting down the months because by month 9 in Korea I need to have made a final decision am I staying or going home, or going elsewhere to teach English (which means lots of fun paper work).
