LOTR is absolutely still great. only thing that struck me as a little weird on my recent watch was that it was eerily white. i mean like all of the characters are white. star wars at least had lando and one or two asian fighter pilots. it was just kind of weird to see such a white cast and also like 95% of them had blue eyes.

i havent read the books (except for the hobbit) but is there any particular reason why everyone is white?

If you're into diversity in casting you should check out Bridgerton, the new Netflix costume drama which depicts an early 19th century London more diverse than it is today. BAME people/POC are ensconced in all areas of life right up to titled positions like Duke and even Queen.  It was a bit disappointing that it took them till episode 4 to include a gay sex scene but you can't have everything.

"Black people would live in the Haradwaith, which is analogous to Africa (Far Harad being sub-Saharan Africa and Near Harad being Mediterranean Africa). We don't see a lot of the Haradwaith in the movies, but iirc there are some dark-skinned, if not black, Haradrim in RotK. The LotR books and The Hobbit are set in proto-Europe.

The men of Far Harad were described in The Return of the King as "black men like half-trolls with white eyes and red tongues""

the books are really good, by the way

Yes, just in case you didn't know, Europe was almost exclusively made up of white people until fairly recently, though luckily we've got Alec Baldwin's wife 'Hillaria' to tell us about that.

Quote
“I am a white girl, Let’s be very clear that Europe has a lot of white people in there,”

I think she got a bit confused and thought pretending to be Spanish would give her oppressed victim points, perhaps not realising that unlike Hispanics, Spanish people are considered as common or garden whites in Europe, as well as having a pretty shameful colonial past.

yeah i really should read the books! and thanks for the info oglop.

and thanks for your... contributions, stoat. i guess...

this weekend i watched memento and source code. i've been meaning to see memento for a long time now and it definitely lived up to my expectations. i think the only chris nolan movie haven't seen now is his first one, following. source code, on the other hand, exceeded my expectations. i like jake gyllenhaal and my gf wanted to see it, so that was enough reason to watch it. i did not expect it to be much deeper than "dude relives the same 8 minutes to solve a mystery" but i was pleasantly surprised.

And you'd never seen either? That's a hell of a weekend! Nice. :)
The first thing to say is that this is definitely not pyramid selling, OK?

Infinity Chamber

Guy is forced to re-live the same day over and over again until the computer controlling him gets the answer it wants. Well done on a low budget but the ending left me feeling ambivalent. Not a big fan of "an open ending to let the audience decide what happened" when there's still too many unknowns left unanswered.

Movie was on my "time-travel/control" list after I watched "Primer" and "Predestination" and re-watched "Inception".

Porn.
Even down to the cheap “cosplay” grade costumes.

Predestination was a trip and a half.
Would definitely recommend.
