I recall from a Philosophy of Music class that Wittgenstein thought Mahler might exemplify the distinction between talent and genius. W recognized M's great talent and thought him a better conductor than composer. But he wasn't sure because of the incommensurability problem: how can one know whether to judge a work of art based on prevailing standards set in the past, or where society has changed such that asserted deficiencies are instead actually apt innovations, heralding in a new era? Aristotle himself said a man's life cannot be judged until a hundred years after his death: some interpreted this in terms of English consequentialism (time is needed to discern the effects it has had) but after Wittgenstein, A's statement has been re-interpreted to refer to the problem of how fast society is changing and whether a person's actions reflect greatness based on his time or a time that had already past but had not yet been recognized; to wit, a sliver/fraction/one part of the 'There's no transcendent perspective' problem, ie., we haven't a God's eye view to judge artwork.

The Mahler post has me playlisting a symphony for my Monday morning 1-hour drive to Jinju (Dvorak, or Mahler's 2nd, probably). Thanks for that.

Sound's like you're doing well and have a healthier mop than myself. I must  take my barber's advice and start using that all day conditioner.
That said, the Hunners were quite a show live. Saw them on my 21'st birthday. The Old lion Hotel on Melbourne street North Adelaide, that brass section with heavy bass was really something.

They were pretentious in a way. Very much inner city Melbourne types, but going for outer suburban cred with their flannelettes shirts and working class tude. It was very contrived but I enjoyed it nonetheless.  Great sound.

Always been a Graham Bonnet fan. I like his style and his 'cool' factor. Just a shame that his image was often at odds with his vocals...he was a rocker in a suit and tie. Some of his vocals when he fronted 'Rainbow' were great, but what you saw just didn't fit with the Richie Blackmore look.

The drummer in this band used to have an Australian Pub in Itaewon. I wonder if he's still in business. It was always a fickle market at best.
