The best of lists are starting to come out.
http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-best-music-of-2011,66004/
I'm way out of the loop this year. I was pretty with it last year, but now what's 'it' isn't 'it' anymore and what is is 'it' is just scary and confusing.

I also think that that list is awful. The Real Estate album was sooooo boring-- I have no idea why so many critics are raving about it.
All of my favorite albums of the past few years have been by bands that no one seems to know about.
Because I am a hipster.

Damn.
I don't know what it is I love so much about collaborations, but something about these three making a song together makes me sort of warm and fuzzy.  :D

I love that remix.

But at the moment, I'm listening to Ladytron's Gravity the Seducer album.

I'm also quite partial to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B-NtXwfiEI

current American pop is almost as bad as K pop.
(actually it's always been horrid. Compared to times past, A- pop is actually better than the monstrosity it use to be, but still.. that Brit Spears, Kesha collaboration, song of the year???? please. LMFAO??? my reaction is LMFAO!

that "justice" whatever that is, almost made me lose my dinner. Sorry   :o

I do like the Marc Anthony/Pitbull collaboration though. Let it Rain Over Me.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmM0653YvXU

vale munequita, abra alli.. and  let it rain over me
pero mira que estas buena... pero mira que estas dura!

(2 of those  curvaceous dark curly haired dancers at the end of the vid provoke a biological reaction that in Korea can only be achieved with pharmaceutical help... that saucy smile and sensuality of the Pittbull's girl in the vid... man oh man how I MISS Latin America!!!!!)

 8)   8)    8)

I typically listen to trance/progressive mixes by Van Buuren, Markus Schulz, etc

good volume and accoustics are a must.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=id93UHYHYfw&feature=relmfu

I'll still occassionally listen to old metal or grunge..  or whip out my salsa or bachata CD's  (Aventura, si!  :)

this one never fails when I want to build up or work out some aggression!  (needs to be cranked!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9FmOc0ofGc

and I listen to this after my classes... singing along:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXIgjQFMCiI

one of the best reggaeton songs ever: (can't believe this guy died)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEDG1aJNiy4

I'll always love Cuban son

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_zQZWZfsbI

and the inolvidable... Yeni Valdez y Los Van Van.. Despues de Todo  (I still remember the crowds and the atmosphere at such concerts..)
on a warm breezy Caribbean night....

I can't remember the last time I heard a female-lead club banger that I loved this much. It's a perfect NYE jam.

Nicki's verse is just so ridiculous. And Ke$ha's hooks are so catchy.

I've kind of changed my mind on this. it's still not my thing/style, but I'll have to admit it's a fairly good general run of the mill pop song

Johny Cash, man in black, solitary man, his covers of personal jejas  :D, and one love... sunday morning blues...

A bit of Leonard Cohen, One of us cannot be wrong, the sisters of mercy, that's how it goes, master song, the future, waiting for the miracle (one of the most intense and emotionaly stimulating songs ever written...)

I do love some Johhny Cash and a bit of Leonard now and then

Sometimes whack on some old hip hop too, bit of public enemy, 3rd bass, compton's most wanted

Will Sessions' "The Elmatic Instrumentals" has been getting a lot of play this week - they made a live version of all of the beats from Nas' classic Illmatic album with Elzhi rapping over them, but I prefer the instrumental versions.

This version of "Represent" is sublime, and what I'm listening to right now.

Also, "Black & Brown" from Black Milk & Danny Brown's EP  released last year gets played at least once a day. Love that beat!

The 2nd link isn't working, but loving the other two! Wish I could understand Spanish.

took a long while for my spanish to get good enough where I could follow most of the rapping. Ain't easy  :) (actually Mistica and 537. a lo cubano is more difficult) .

the lyrics/raps are actually significant. One of the reasons the group became the phenomenon they did when that first album came out was because the really pushed the envelope on the lyrics... rapping about the realities of daily life in Cuba in a way no way had ever dared do so before. The album was made outside of Cuba (Spain I think) so there was little that the govt could do to stop it, though they never crossed the line to such an extent where the govt would feel compelled to)

actually you can probably find the lyrics to said songs on Google.. run them thru an online translator and at least get a general idea .. though there's a lot of Cuban slang in there..(most difficult of all Spanish language slangs)

a lo cubano.. means the cuban way... doing it the cuban way.. I wish I could be in that video  :), especially the guy on float..     8)
mistica.. is simply an ode to a woman, like the woman in the video..how hot she is.. sexy she is.. blah blah blah.

here's another link to "537".. that song is a rap spinoff of the very famous Buena Vista Social Club hit.. "el Chan Chan"..
it's essentially an ode to Havana, places in Havana..how they miss Havana. (mind you they're in Spain making the album) . Cubans react very sentimentally to that song.. you see in the comments... people who left 15 years ago. they hear that song.. see that video.. they still want to cry... it's a piece of them.. their heart that will never leave them.

I have similar attachment, having spent time there.

here's the original BVSC Chan Chan

www.youtube.com/watch?v=INkLVwtIr_I

(I first came in the summer of 1998.. that video rings so so close to my heart)

here's the Orichas rap spinoff - the lyrics/rap here is much easier to understand (they even rap off various famous hoods and places in Havana)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aswAzHU8eY

btw.. you may also like this song.. also made a Cuban group  (clan 537) (btw, Cubans are world's best dancers bar none,, I'm talking average guy/girl on street) and many of them phenomenal musicians.  Corazon de Hielo means Heart (made) of Ice. Singing about his ex gf who betrayed him/left him for an old rich guy because money and social status was all she cared about.  (lyrics easy to understand if you know Spanish)
