There is a shortage of foreign teachers.  Therefore shit pay will not fill most of these positions.  In 2024, start pay at 2.8 million won a month (2.5 million in 2023).  Let pay go up to 3.8 or even 4 million for years of experience.  If you do not do this Scotty, you will not fill most of these positions.  Smarten up!

Or hagwons will just not hire E-2s, because it's too expensive and not worth all the bullshit.

Paying a living wage is bullshit?  Some real selfish arseholes in Korea it seems.  At any rate, mothers want foreigners to meet their kids and will skip hogwans too cheap to hire foreigners.  Let them lose enrollments for their arrogance and stinginess.  The ones who still hire foreigners will get the business.  The ones who pay a living wage will get the teachers.  End of story.

BTW, an F visa will expect even more than an E2.  They sure are not going to work for less.  Let them pay or let them go without.  They had it good for years.  Now it is the teachers turn.

Or Hagwons pay peanuts and think that 2.1million is generous so why shouldn’t the “foreigner” teach 9 classes a day and get just 30 mins of break time which also includes their prep time.

They did do that for years because they could.  Folks kept coming over like lemmings.  Now they aren't and it's an abrupt shock to them.  Some of them are whining about having to pay a fair wage to get people now.  They raised what they charge kids from 15 years ago, so pass some of it on.  But after years of them having it good, I feel no pity for them.  The cost of living went up but they chose to keep pay the same because they could.  Tells me a lot about their character and what type of people they are.  Let them pay back now or get out of the business.

There's not that much more money per hagwon than before, at least not for the elementary level that E-2s normally focus on.

Fees are higher, but they're capped, while costs are through the roof. This inflation affects hagwon owners just as much as employees.

The birth rate is way down on what it was when E-2s earned a relatively high salary, so forget ever seeing that kind of salary again unless you want to teach adults and have a 10 or 12 hour day.

The idea that hagwon owners are raking it in is absurd. I will make around 4 million this month, for well over 50 hours of work, most of it contact hours. That's hardly a fortune, and it requires a schedule that would be illegal to make an employee follow.

All this childish whining about job conditions will do little; E-2s aren't going to get money that isn't there.

I received a barrage of insults as comments, DMs, and e-mails when I posted a job ad for the same salary I received in 2021. One person will even be reported for defamation and insult when I have the time.

But all the shitty comments didn't make me decide to offer more money. The money isn't there. Instead, I'll hire an F visa to work part-time instead, to cover times that I really don't have the energy for. The hourly rate is high, but I won't have to worry about housing deposits, the many additional monthly costs of a full-time teacher, or childish behaviour.

You guys are talking yourselves out of jobs.

BTW, I'm a long-term expat and I've been following this board for a very long time. The way E-2s have changed over the past few years is pathetic. People need to get a life instead of making a hobby of complaining about job ads.

Or the market is saturated with too many Hagwons offering basically the same program but they all have a faulty belief of “If I open it, they will all come”. Add into the mix: Korean parents’ irrationality and you get a business model that is not sustainable and involves cost cutting or additional work at a timely cost at every step to just keep it afloat.

You don't care about the reasons why salaries aren't higher. I'd have thought you would.

Somebody living in Korea insulted me publicly on Facebook and then privately threatened to defame my hagwon. My assistant reported him to the regular Korean police today, and I have a good chance of actually winning. It's not some ridiculous empty threat.

You might want to take a look at just how easy it is to fall foul of Korean cyber insult laws.

I saw your post on Facebook. Putting aside any of the job conditions, your replies both here and on Facebook only serve to make the task of finding a teacher more difficult.

sounds like a skill issue tbh. if you cant run  your business well enough to pay a decent enough wage to attract good teachers, maybe its time to go into some other business. as an expat yourself turning around to scam people in the position you presumably once were is about as low as one can get

I think my replies were very reasonable, as was my job ad considering the very low cost of housing here.

I will simply not hire from social media again. The kind of people who get hysterical about job ads are not the kind of people I want to work with.

What part of my job ad was a scam exactly?

My offer was well above minimum wage and complied with all aspects of the LSA for businesses with less than 5 employees. The whole package would cost the hagwon 3.0/month.

In which area is housing at a “very low cost”? And what kind of housing is one able to get at that very low cost?

I think my replies were very reasonable, as was my job ad considering the very low cost of housing here.

I will simply not hire from social media again. The kind of people who get hysterical about job ads are not the kind of people I want to work with.

You got overly defensive and complained about whiny e-2 visa holders. The people in the replies aren't the people interested in applying for your job. Your attitude is going to put off applicants who otherwise deemed the working conditions acceptable. Why add a red flag about the boss into what is already a shitty offer?

In which area is housing at a “very low cost”? And what kind of housing is one able to get at that very low cost?

For the allowance I offered: a clean 1-bedroom apartment, recently remodeled, 10 minutes walk from the hagwon.

My parents stayed in an AirBnB in the building I'm thinking of. It's nothing like the kind of dump the Seoulites are thinking of.

If a boss defending himself against verbal abuse and defamation is a red flag to some people, then so be it. The abuse fired at hagwon owners on social media is getting out of hand, and teachers need to see things from both sides (as I have).

A boss getting into petty online arguments with teachers online isn't a good look for a hagwon.

did any of us ask? stop whining on waygook dot org about it and just do it, lol. its not like any of us were gonna take your job anyways, what do you hope to accomplish here other than venting your frustration that people arent jumping at the chance to work for subpar wages?

What part of my job ad was a scam exactly?

My offer was well above minimum wage and complied with all aspects of the LSA for businesses with less than 5 employees. The whole package would cost the hagwon 3.0/month.
