Question about taking phones abroad
« on: September 17, 2023, 08:27:13 am »
I have an Oppo A16k smart phone. It's about 3 years old I think.

I'm going to Canada this Christmas and I'd like to know if my phone will work. Or, if there is something I can do to make it work on the Canadian network.

Help....

"Excellent question."
Help others, especially animals. Say what you think, be considerate of others. Appreciate more than deprecate. Teach well, jump on teachable moments. Enjoy Korea as it is, without changing it. Dwell! Yet, at times, change your life for the better. "The most important [thing] is to have a good day."

This will be my first time back to Canada since 2008. I wonder had bad the culture shock will be?

The only time I experienced a somewhat negative culture shock going back home was when I went back and planned to stay.  It was difficult to just settle back into the normal routine.  Once your worldview expands it can be difficult going back to that earlier life. Likely, why I only lasted six months and was pretty happy to be on the plane out of there.

In terms of going back for a short visit, it's great.  I haven't been back for a Canadian winter since 2008, and I love Canadian summer.  Going back for two or three weeks is fantastic.  No where in the world feels like Toronto to me and it's great being back for a short stint.  Lots of changes, but it's not a culture shock to me when it's a short visit.  It's fresh and exciting.  I just know from experience that feeling won't last.

Probably depends. I imagine if one was going to Vancouver or Toronto it wouldn't be so bad. Other areas...

Like, there's some really big differences in some ways and things we take for granted. Like being able to easily and affordably get around everywhere. Reliability in terms of time tables of public transport. Internet and WiFi infrastructure. Cleanliness and safety of public transport. Lack of street crime. Certain things of convenience.

From what a lot of people say who go back to small-mid-size towns, it's kind of like stepping back in time in some ways. On the other hand in big cities, you might find yourself severely out of touch with how things are back home these days.

Hopefully it helps you appreciate things about back home more and things about Korea more.

Check the specs of the phone then Google the carrier you will use for what band and frequency they use. These days phones are pretty much international.

I checked it out. The carrier it was compatable with I have never heard of. Apparently I need a new SIM card and maybe a contract or something. Not worth it. The wifi might work though, with a new SIM card.

The friend I am staying with will give me one. He has a closet full of new phones apparently. I wonder if that phone will work back in SE Asia? He said he has one of those groovy folding phones for me. I wonder what they're like? Anyone have one?

Wifi will work with the internet as that is not sim card dependent. I doubt you will be able to make phone calls though if you don't have a sim card.  Remember having the correct sim card but not the phone that works on their band and frequency will be useless.

Thank you. I'll bring it along to play chess. :-)
