What movies make you cry?
« on: July 06, 2023, 09:00:06 am »
I watched The Whale last night and it brought me to tears. It made me think... as I've gotten older I find more movies making me tear up. I like to think of it as a sign of my emotional strength

So, what films make/have made you cry?

The 400 Blows

SPOILER

When he gets to the beach.............. ............. That's all he wanted. This entire movie. He just wants parents who love him. He lashes out, he does the wrong thing. He's not evil, he just needs some guidance.

So when he gets to the beach, it's such a release. And that quick zoom/freeze frame. It makes me cry like a little baby.

Also, I can't listen to Naive Melody (This Must Be the Place) by The Talking Heads without welling up. It's not my favourite song, but it is a perfect song.

Quote
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I'm just an animal looking for a home and
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me 'til my heart stops
Love me 'til I'm dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots, hit me on the head, I go
Ooh

This is perfection.
And if my thought-dreams could be seen
They’d probably put my head in a guillotine

Lately, I've been absolutely hooked on live stream tv kostenlos platforms that allow us to stream films as they premiere! There's something so thrilling about watching a movie at the same time as countless others around the globe. It's like we're all in a virtual theater together, sharing the experience, and feeling the same emotions as the story unfolds. The sense of community is just amazing.

Call me an old softy and sentimental, but the last scene of
"I Spit on your Grave", https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1242432/,
when she shoves a 12-gauge up the guys ass and then blows his
head off from the inside out.

Yeah, that brought a tear to my eye.

True Grit. The tenderness and love Rooster showed for young Mattie after she got bit by the rattlesnake, rushing her to Boon's for care and staying close.....yeah...I love that movie. My favourite of all time. The Duke deserved the Best Actor Oscar for that role, despite the serious competition.

Haven't seen the original in full. Based off of clips..ehhh...Boy does Glenn Campbell lack in the role of LeBeouf. Not the biggest John Wayne fan. Dude was a bit of a poser.

The remake is amazing in that it is great in spite of what I would consider to be indifferent performances by Bridges and Damon. The rest of the film was amazing and superbly cast and scored.

But I think the best interpretation is the audiobook reading by Donna Tart. Her southern drawl is perfect for what is a narration that splits the difference between Maddie Ross the narrator and the person of Maddie Ross as told in the story narrated by Maddie Ross.

I cried tears of joy at the end of Zootopia.  It meant summer camp was over and I was free.

I always wondered why it was called "summer camp".  There has
never been a more egregious misnomer than that Korean term.

Latest movie to make me cry is Spider-man: Across the Spider-verse.

Because it's during summer vacation, it takes place away from home, and it's supposed to be "fun".

I agree that "camp" isn't the best word to use here, but I haven't been able to think of a better word for this bullshit.

What would you call it?

summer school

That implies that the program is academic and is structured as part of the main curriculum.

And we all know that it's none of those things haha.

Dude, enough. Did you never go to summer camp as a kid?  Were you studying
English or math? Would anybody outside of Korea think, "Oh, yes. Summer camp.
That is where we go and not camp, but to study."

... I have finally gotten Corona.
A few bottles of it, apparently. ;)

The difference between "corona" and Corona.

The fact that COVID19, the recent coronavirus, is referred in Korean as the slang "corona" has killed the Mexican beer imports, as almost overnight the brand had disappeared from so many convenience stores.

Help others, especially animals. Say what you think, be considerate of others. Appreciate more than deprecate. Teach well, jump on teachable moments. Enjoy Korea as it is, without changing it. Dwell! Yet, at times, change your life for the better. "The most important [thing] is to have a good day."

Yeah, sarcasm on the net can be hard sometimes, everyone here has witnessed stuff go right over my head, too. It's Friday, we're allowed.

Camp isn't great but in this case, but given the variance in form it takes, this is probably the best. "Summer school" generally has a remedial context. "Summer class" is usually for college and the like.

English Camp would probably equate to what was called "Rec & Ed" back home. Half education, half "campy" stuff focused more on activities and crafts.
