How do you kick start your day?
« on: April 18, 2023, 12:47:10 pm »
How do you like to start your day? Up early? Spend every possible second in bed? Breakfast? Skip it? What works for you?

I like to wake up early. I have a 25 minute stretching routine I do when I get out of bed. As I've gotten older this has become more essential . After stretching, I make myself breakfast. Then it's time for a shower and getting ready. I've found my morning routine has gradually led to an earlier bedtime. But I feel a lot better at work when I haven't rushed in the morning. I have gotten my routine down to a fine art but that has also caused some negatives. Even little deviations from the norm can leave me feeling rushed and stressed at the start of the day. Last night I didn't pick out a shirt for today and this morning I had to iron one. I felt less relaxed knowing I was more likely to be late. How do other people approach the start of their day?

i'm not really a morning person, it takes me a while to hop out of bed. so i usually set my alarm about an hour early so i can lay in bed for a bit, then have a shit and a shower and all that.

i usually skip breakfast. i like to say its because im intermittent fasting, really im just lazy (although i have cut the late-night snacking habit)

Yeah, a shot of Jack Daniels and a couple of cigarettes gets me out
of bed most days.

Do you keep a bottle of Jack by your bed?

Yeah, my mother-in-law got me this sweet bed from Ikea. Came
with a built in mini-bar.

She's not averse to a morning snort either.

I've become one. I didn't even notice it happening. It has made staying out late on weekends difficult

Because I have a bus and subway ride in the morning I try to get up and get out as quickly and efficiently as possible.  I have long passed the stage where I feel compelled to dress up for work.  There were so many teachers in jeans and casual tops I decided to follow suit.  So, getting dressed takes no time.  I also used to throw my smoothie ingredients into the blender, hop in the shower, get out and mix and drink my smoothie.  Now, I make the smoothie in the evening and put it in a Lock 'n Lock bottle and take it to go in the morning.  Also, a couple of times a week (I'm hoping to get it up to four but it's tough) I'll get up an hour earlier at six and grab my lunch, smoothie and head out the door sans shower and in my gym clothes.  Both my gym and girlfriend's morning workplace are located directly above my destination subway station.  I pop in give my gf my lunch that she puts in the fridge.  I then head upstairs and am working out before seven.  Quick shower at the gym and I am back downstairs to chat for ten minutes, grab my lunch and head to work.  My large classroom has plenty of cupboard space where I store pants and shirts.  I change out of my gym clothes and get ready for the day.  Please note that I don't sweat much and do no cardio at the gym.  My gym clothes are dry.  This will all become even easier when we hit the warm weather.  Men are allowed to wear dress style shorts at work so it becomes even easier. And starting the day after a workout feels great and I know that at the end of the day, I can do what I want and not worry about skipping the gym.

Get up at 5:30, drag myself out for a 40 minute run (or more recently, cycle), then shower, get the kiddo ready, then out the door by 720 so I can drive to work.
Except on fridays, where I ride my bike to work. Get to sleep in until 6! Whooo.

Man, I hate getting up early.  >:(

oof, yeah, i can imagine. i'm lucky that both the schools ive worked at housed me at a 10-15 minute walk away. i did have a travel school my first couple years, but it was pretty small and low on space so they let me come in an hour late and leave right after my last class.

i dont know if i'll ever fully make the transition, but i have lost the ability to stay up nearly as late as i used to. once it hits two or so im out for the night. at my worst back when i was a jobless degenerate i used to stay up until 6 or 7 in the morning and sleep in until 2, then meet up with friends in the evening and repeat. those were the days!

Wel II woke up this morning and I got myself a beer.

Actually, if I'm not cycling first thing in the morning, I take a cold shower inspired by Wim Hof.

On weekdays in Korea it's been with a cup of tea at 9am or 10am, followed by an hour-plus stroll. My small-town upbringing really helped me appreciate two decades in smaller communities hereabouts.

I've never worked a job that usually starts before 2pm, so the mornings are entirely up to me. And, to wit, Korea mornings are full of quietude, er, plus garbage trucks and kids on foot.

No need for coffee until about 2pm, after an occasional midday nap prior to beginning the work day.

Every day is two days in one when you are naturally a morning person who eagerly wakes up on a weekday at 6am and has until 3pm to teach.

(Weekends are a different animal.)

Help others, especially animals. Say what you think, be considerate of others. Appreciate more than deprecate. Teach well, jump on teachable moments. Enjoy Korea as it is, without changing it. Dwell! Yet, at times, change your life for the better. "The most important [thing] is to have a good day."

I only make it to the gym twice a week. I'm happy going on my way home from work. A few hours later would be my preference but I prefer it when it's quieter. I tried going before work for a month a few years ago and could never get breakfast right. Always felt too hungry by mid morning. During vacation deskwarming periods I get to work about an hour later than usual. That gives me enough time to hit the gym and get something fixed up for breakfast. Feels good to get the workout done early. But during the semester it's evening workouts for me.

Get up at 5:30, drag myself out for a 40 minute run

I go for a short evening run around 8/9pm twice a week. And a slightly longer morning run on either Saturday or Sunday. I definitely feel better during the morning run but even for that run I'm not out until around 8am. I don't know if I'd be able to do a 5:30am run

I do. When I was working on hainan island (the hawaii of china, AKA the Jeju of korea, AKA the cabo of mexico AKA the canary islands of Spain) I knew an old lady from the former soviet republic of karaokestan. She did that description to a tee if ya know what I mean. She was probably at least 85 years old, but she would tell the kids she was west philadelphia born and raised and spent most of her childhood days shooting basketball, and then some kids who were up to no good starting coming to get neighborhood. She got into one small fight and her mom got scared and sent her to live with her aunt and uncle in bel-air. Maybe she was just yanking their chain, I dunno, Anyway she couldn't use all the newfangled equipment in the classrooms, what do you call them ? Smart boards? More like dumb boards amirite, anyway her son was  a total waster. Would always turn up drunk, end up puking in front of the kids and passing out. At first they ran away screaming but eventually they got used to it and remembered to bring there rain gear to his class. Then one day he had a bit too much and got the sack (that's a britishism, we invented it on Tuesday in the language lab, if ya know then ya know) and his mother looked the director straight in the eyes and said "If you have a problem with my son then you have a problem with ME!!!!!" And like that they were off in a jiffy! (Like the peanut butter) dunno what happened to her. probably ended up teching the kids in her home country of the former Yugoslav Republic of Karaokestan, currently claimed by the principality of san monaco
